Anyone get a hard drive shipped from NCIX lately? Are they still just dropping the drives into a box and tossing in a handfull of foam chips? Got a couple from them years ago just bouncing around together in the box, with a bit of foam to offer "protection". I'm tempted to try again but won't if the cousin in the basement (shipping department) is still there.

Why don't you ask NCIX?

Right.

I got a hard-drive, 25-pack DVD-R's and a DVD burner packed together a while ago. It was packed with foam chips. The contents didn't rattle and worked fine.

if you are worried you could buy their heavy duty box for $5.99

I'm not sure what good a heavy duty box is if the contents are left to smack into each other with inadequate packaging. Hard drives need to be extremely well pack if they're not to be damaged.

Yes, they are.

I got a 200 gig drive last year. The drive itself was in a plastic case, which was in a box with some newspaper wrapped around it.

The drive itself had been dropped, the plastic case was cracked, and the plastic shell around the IDE connector was cracked. I had to crack off some pieces of plastic, and then bend some pins back into place.

has worked fine ever since. Didn't bother trying to contact them, not worth my time to deal with them.

NCIX sucks at shipping.

I've ordered a few hard drives from them this year. They all came individually bubble wrapped in a few layers of the stuff. Then the box was filled with the rest of the usual packing materials. It worked well to protect the drives.

No complaints here.

Sounds like they've gone from completely awful to hit and miss.

Maybe it depends on the packer you get or how much packing material they have left. I bought headphones and a pack of DVD-R's from them recently and it seemed to be packed with packing material from some other product. No foam chips this time but it was still packed securely.

Sounds like they've gone from completely awful to hit and miss.

Accumulate 500 points (takes 20 weeks if all you do is sign up for their newsletter) and get NCIX's VIP membership for free (free RMA shipping back to them), and just pay a little more for shipping insurance (if the item you're buying is over $100). Or pay a little more for Express RMA shipping insurance.

When NCIX does screwup, sending in a priority ticket will usually fix the problem.

shipping is free for me, and I don't have VIP membership, they offered to pay for shipping for my last 2 exchange/returns.

I've only ordered from them a couple times, but both seemed alright.

Their shipping prices were inflated though.
