There has been a real lull in good movies lately. I'm looking for some good "sleeper" movies I may have missed in the last 10 or so years..

Yeah, that movie was a major surprise. I thought it was going to suck, but it actually turned out to be pretty darn good. Same thing with John Q, that speech/phone call at the end was really really touching and sad  .

I like a pretty diverse range of movies. My favs include American Beauty, Run Lola Run, Fight Club, Donnie Darko, Iron Giant, The Shawshank redemption..I'm looking for the sleeper films that most people haven't seen, but should.

...And Justice For All.
Undeniably one of Pacino's best performance.

If you can find a copy, Swimming With Sharks (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0114594/) is one of Kevin Spacey's gems that not a lot of people have seen.
If you like heist movies, another great is Ronin (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0122690/) with DeNiro and Jean Reno.

You might want to try Gattaca if you like intelligent Sci-Fi, although it may be too close to mainstream. Many people like Dark City as another overlooked Sci-Fi movie but I wasn't as enamoured with it as many people are - including Roger Ebert who gave it 4 stars. For an interesting concept, you might want to try Slacker by Richard Linklater. It's a movie with no predominate star because noone appears on the screen for more than 5 mins.
That's three off the top of my head.

It's kinda hard to know what a sleeper movie is because we don't know how much you know about movies....
anyways...here's my contribution: L.A. Confidential with Guy Pierce, Kevin Spacey, Danny DaVitto, Russel Crowe, Kim Basinger...
I think it's a great thriller! With a good complex script which doesn't seem so complex once you reach the end.

The Quick and the Dead
I think this movie was largely overlooked by moviegoers. It's not a great movie by any stretch of the imagination, but looking back on it now, it had a great emsemble cast: Sharon Stone, Russell Crowe, Gene Hackman, Leonardo DiCaprio, and a couple of nice minor roles by Lance Henrickson, and Gary Sinise. Also, it was directed by Sam Raimi who was mainly known for his Evil Dead movies at that time, but has gone on to mainstream success with Spider-Man. Accompanied by a nice soundtrack, I think this movie is worth a look if you want to see the beginnings of some actors before they went on to stardom.

Cool Hand Luke (http://imdb.com/title/tt0061512/); I don't care who you are, if you don't like this movie, there's something wrong with you.

I second Before Sunrise/Before Sunset. Awesome movies that grossed very little.
Among dramas, try A Simple Plan or Elizabeth.

I enjoyed those too, and was really impressed with how the sequel had a 99% chance of destroying the original, and instead managed to both add to the overall story and have a satisfying ending (unless there's a 3rd entry).

Forget Hollywood, the best movie probably very few people have seen is Cube.
And it's Canadian, go figure.

I thought these were supposed to be movies few people have seen...this list reads like a top 40 (except for Behind the Green Door....nice reference there!)
How about City of God? World renowned now, but still not many people have seen it.

one of the best " unknown`s " i`ve seen ........ " The Beast " , i googled it a bit and the first few hits tell almost the whole story so dont read past the first few lines . this is an older movie but one you`ll definately like !
...........Perhaps the most underappreciated film of the 80's, the Beast stands out as a solid war epic, with heart, action and beautiful imagery. Set during the Soviet Union's brutal war against Afghanistan, the Beast chronicles one tank's attempts to get back to friendly lines. The conscience of the tank crew is a young soldier played by Jason Patric. Increasingly put off by the atrocities against civilians that his hardened tank commander (wonderfully played by a rather lean George Dzundza!) has them all commit, he is forced out of the tank and left to die in the Afghan desert. While waiting to die, he is set upon by the rebels, who spare his life, and accept his aid in going after his comrades' tank! There was a lot to like about the Beast. Good acting all around. Fine attention to military detail. Suspenseful, well-done action scenes. Haunting score by Mark Isham. And amazing, razor-sharp cinematography by Douglas Milsome. The images of the desert are haunting and beautifully composed.

Since someone mentioned Ronin, which is an excellent flick, I would suggest Heat as well. Great show, a bit long but well worth it.
A bomb I actually liked was Adventures Of Pluto Nash. The story was a bit lame but great special effects. Loved Pluto's robot bodyguard, great character...

I saw this movie, but the plot seemed to go around in circles.
One movie that I would recommend is from 1987: Planes, Trains and Automobiles with John Candy and Steve Martin. One of the funniest movies you'll see.
