Synopsis/Summary: Russell Crowe stars in the story inspired by the life of legendary athlete Jim Braddock, a once- promising light heavyweight boxer forced into retirement after a string of losses in the ring. As the nation enters the darkest years of the Great Depression, Braddock accepts a string of dead-end jobs to support his wife, Mae (Renée Zellweger), and their children, while never totally abandoning his dream of boxing again.

Thanks to a last minute cancellation, Braddock finds himself back in the ring against the second-ranked world contender--and to everyone's amazement, Braddock wins in the third round. Despite being pounds lighter than his opponents and repeated injuries to his hands, Braddock continues to fight against challengers and win. Carrying on his shoulders the hopes and dreams of the disenfranchised masses, Braddock, dubbed the "Cinderella Man," faces his toughest challenger in Max Baer (Craig Bierko), the heavyweight champion of the world, renowned for having killed two men in the ring.

Braddock--not so much a great boxer as a great man who boxed--climbed into the ring seeking nothing more than to provide for his wife and children. His commitment to them inspired him to championship, elevating the family man with a simple cause to the level of legend.

I'm actually looking forward to this movie. Regardless of what people think, I feel this movie is going to be a hit and it will most likely get nominated for the Oscars (Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor, Best Actress and Best Director).

The tandem of Russell Crowe and Ron Howard is a formula for success.

Hah. The madison square garden is the Queen St Bay Store in Toronto :)
I am liking it but too bad that they have this annoying Reneé Zellweger as a female actress. Don't like that lady at all. All fake.

Care to explain what you mean by fake? I'm not a member of the Renee Zellwegger Fan Club; actually, I'm not a fan at all, but she is at least marginally capable given what is being passed off as "actors" these days.

I'll probably see it, in spite of Renee Zellweger; Russell Crowe is one of the few Hollywood superstars who has both effort and talent in his films.

Cool, when did you see it? There have been Screenings for the press/select audiences since April 1st.

Paramount, Wednesday the 18th. They were advance screening promo passes. They searched everyone's bags for recording devices and had two security personnel on both sides of theatre watching us the whole time.

Renee was charming, and Paul whatshisface was entertaining as usual. Russell sounded like Mel Gibson during the whole movie - that put me off a bit. And even though it's a 2+ hour movie, it wasn't boring in the slightest.

I just saw the movie yesterday and I have to say WOW! what a movie. This movie is definately worth a watch. This movie will most definately get nominated for Best Picture, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography. As Amourek said, even though the movie is 144 minutes, it's not boring for a second. Although i'm not much of a boxing fan, I found myself on the edge of my seat during the boxing matches. It was so exciting and engaging that I felt like cheering out loud. The boxing scenes were beautifully shot. Also, it's better that you go into watching the movie without looking up the history of Jim Braddock. If you do, you'll enjoy the movie even more. If you've seen the movie already, you'll know what I'm talking about.

Now this is a well told tale!

I was starting to get a little gun shy of little Ronnie Howard's director skills after his recent misfires with The Missing, A Beautiful Mind, How the Grinch Stole Christmas, EdTV, Ransom... actually, you've got to go back a full decade to 1995's Apollo 13 to find a well directed film out of Opie/Ritchie!

But heavens be praised, he's pulled another great movie out of his creative imagination!

Cinderella Man is an exciting biographical story, set against the Great Depression, which hits all the right emotional punches to knock the viewer ecstatically silly with joyous glee as the classic underdog story swimgs toward the final round.

Supporting actors including Zellwegger, Giamatti, and a whole troop of perfectly cast character actors add immeasurably to the believability of the 1930's period feel.

Yup, I really enjoyed this one!

I gotta give it ***** out of *****!

(I don't know why they release this kinda movie in June - it came in 4th at the box office this weekend - why drop it into the summer fray? If they're not going to launch it in the usual Xmas slot for this kind of Oscar-worthy drama - then why not put it out in February or March when there's nothing worthwhile to see?)

(...and boy, it makes me mad that a piece of misdirected schlock like Million Dollar Baby gets so many accolades, and tries to steal the thunder from a quality boxing drama like this... )

Saw it on the weekend.

Decent film though I thought movie went kinda "over the top" in making Braddock so "angelic" while making Baer so "evil".
