Ok, so my last question about HDTV CRT TVs was answered so I thought I would reuse the same post to ask my next question....
I am comparing two TVs and one supports 480i/480p/960i/1080i and the other supports 540p/1080i.
Would the TV that supports 540p/1080i work with game system or DVD players that display 480p or do you have to use a TV that specifically states 480p support.

I know there are 30" and 34" ones by Toshiba and Sony, price range from $900-$2000 generally. There are 27" ones as well for ~$700 avg.

I guess I should mention I do not need to be able to watch TV in hi def so a HD ready TV would be fine. I just want to be able to play the HD games.

yes there are quite a few tube 16:9 and 4:3 HD tv's
A 36 inch would have a large footprint and would reqire 2 people to lift it. Mind you the picture would be stunning.
If you need some examples I guess it would be best to start with the Big Block 2001, fs, bb , leons etc... stores to get some ideas on what you want and what you can afford. Or if your lucky enough to live near some tv shops then go looking.
a 30 inch sammy TXP3064 will set you back around a 1000
same with the jvc AV30W585
LG , sony Toshiba, Hitatchi all make tubes
the 34 inch ones get all little expensive
I would look on the web sites about first what you want in a tv... Such as the different modes such as 480i,480p,1080 etc... Number and type of inputs you require, Size and weight that works with you. Then pick your budget. Remember you will want to upgrade your dvd player to one that plays 1080 and you will need the cords to go with that... Could be on the day of purchase or you will purchase in the near future.... don't buy the monster cables they push on you :)
Then when you have that all mapped out. Check out the online sites to see what tv's match your requirements and start pricing them out. Then go out to the stores and get them to hook up an xbox to it, hook up a cheap dvd player and a good one... watch regular tv and high def on it. Record how you feel when watching it... then move on to the next one... repeat... and go to different stores and do the same drill all over. Keep notes.
This will force you not to impulse buy and to really evaluate what you want at the store vs what you really need.
see i am waiting for the next gen sammy lcd's and then i am going to buy the current 46 inch one :)
Has everything I want...

also since you play xbox you will want to see how the 780p stuff is if you cannot get that in native mode on the tv.... ( cannot remember off the top of my head what xbox games are at now )
and no doubt you will purchase the new xbox down the road so make sure the tv can handle that in its glory

Since size isn't really a consideration, why not use your computer monitor? A TV tuner (to accept/decode the signal from your console) should be pretty cheap.

A TV that has 540p support upconverts the incoming 480i/p signal to 540p.

Thanks!
Is the end result a better looking image then that of TV that supports 480p by default?

It depends.
Some TV upconverters are certainly better than others. Check out www.AVSforum.com and www.Hometheaterforum.com for the specific model you are looking at. I personally bought a WS Panasonic that supports 480P and 1080i, it doesn't do anything with 720p. The very few Xbox games that support 720p I had zero interest in. The next generation will allow you to select 1080i or 720p since they minimally are supposed to support those resolutions.
