you seem to have lots of clients on your network, does your linksys actually hold up to all those connections? do you BT?
i have 2 computers on my network
look.ca dsl > alcatel speedtouch home > smc 2804wbr router
i find my router dying alot when i BT, seems like i need a router with higher routing capabilities
BT specs:
4 active torrents
max 1000 global connections
global u/l max 9KB/s (16KB/s is my MAX)
global d/l unlimited
so i'm not saturating my upstream BW, but rather my router seems to "die", a reset usually does the trick, so any recommendations? should i build a dedicated ICS server?

Well for starters I don't use torrents, only newsgroups. And my linksys holds up well since my Domain controller does all the routing. Network speeds are excellent using the linksys and dlink switch.

Yup BT's fine. No network problems whatsoever. On top of that, we also got IRC, Azerus, Ares, & KazaaLite. Not sure if it matters, but 3com nics all around for these workstations.
wow... may i have the model name of ur router?

But I should also point out we don't do heavy downloading on BT as compared to other RFDers, but we do heavy IRC. Might want to start a thread asking which router would hold to BT best- though do a search first, i think there was a recent thread on this.
EDIT: I use a Linksys WRT54G. I believe it's version 3. I also paid for an additional IP for load balancing and other purposes, which i'm sure it made a difference in the network traffic as well.

Its not the amount of bandwidth you use that kills it, its the number of open connections you have. Try changing that max 1000 global to something conservative, like 128 or something. Your BT speeds will probably suffer, but it should stop (or at least slow down) the router death.
If you wanna have lots of connections, you need a router that can handle it. Any decent computer you use as a router should be more than enough to do that.

yea... as of currently i have my BT computer hooked DIRECTLY to dsl modem... i was planning to use my old celeron 900 as a router, not 100% sure how to build one though...
oh yea... i didn't want to change max 1000 to something lower since i've never hit 1000 anyways  my router dies around 500 already...

Give m0n0wall a go... it's well documented unlike some other distributions. Astaro is also good... steep requirements... not sure if it's free anymore. FreeSCO if you're running ancient hardware. 2nics... an old pc... and get your hands dirty. It's pretty fun and you'll learn a thing or 2 about networking and security :)
