View Full Version : Intermittent disconnects: Rogers (Extreme)

I'm getting intermittent disconnects on my Rogers Extreme Cable service. This has been happening for months. Usually it will reconnect within 30 seconds, but is very annoying, especially for instant messenging and Bit Torrent.
Because it doesn't last that long, its hard for Rogers Tech to do a diagnosis, because by the time I get through to a rep, its already back online and working great...
Any suggestions?

Is the modem going offline, or do you have packet loss? If the modem is going offline, sounds like you have cable issues. If the modem stays online, try pinging the neighbourhood gateway and see if you have any packet loss. If the gateway shows good, try pinging www.rogers.com using the pathping command which will show the packet loss per router on the way to them. I have seen a few crappy routers in the past and I emailed Rogers my results and tell them to fix it.

Let me guess. You have a wireless router. :D
Your problem sounds alot more on par with your wireless router being the culprit. But first I would suggest to connect your cable modem directly into your PC to see if Rogers is really at fault. If you get no more dropped connections, then you can rule out Rogers and I would put my money on a router issue.
If you do own a wireless router.... A common issue with wireless routers is that they are known to briefly disconnect your internet connection. This problem has plagued every wireless router regardless of manufacturer. Typically a firmware update resolves this. If you have a cheap router, you may be without a prayer even with the update. But try it anyways.

My wireless is rock solid, feels just like a wired connection.

My wireless is rock solid, feels just like a wired connection. Then you are one of the lucky ones who got away w/o any disconnects, because it is a very common problem with wireless routers. :D

I feel your pain.
There was a period of a few months awhile ago where I would get dropped connections pretty much ever hour. Rogers couldn't really do much about it.
Though in my case I'm pretty sure it was a problem with Rogers themselves. As I read alot of reports from other users(freinds included) who were having the same problems.
Eventually the problem went away on it's own.

A little off topic but yes, a lot of people who setup wireless routers as an addition to an existing wired network do not configure it properly because by default, it can conflict with your main router's ip address and also it should not be setup as a DHCP server.

Believe me, it's NOT a problem with wireless routers. At least not in most cases. It's a problem on Rogers' end.

Its that new Motorola modem. Never had a problem with my router with the old Terayon I had, then Rogers forces you to switch and my network has been down ever since (constant dropped connections every hour). It is obviously the router conflicting with the new modem, but I was content before, now I am screwed. Thanks Rogers.

If it's the same issues that K/W was having awhile back then it probably has nothing to do with the modem or router. Although that's what Rogers will try and blame it on.
When this happened in K/W it was a problem with Rogers infastructure. If you did trace routes there was one point where the connection was dropping out. And it was always outside of the home network. And it was affecting people without routers, as well as people on the older modems.
