Wow!!! Good news for all Nintendo fans! I can't wait!
Pre-E3 2005: Breaking: Revolution Details
Sleek system to play standard DVDs, says Nintendo. More inside.
by Matt Casamassina

May 12, 2005 - The Electronics Entertainment Expo 2005 is still days away, but that hasn't stopped Microsoft from debuting its Xbox 360 console on MTV. And now Nintendo has followed suit, revealing some new, meaty details about its next-generation console, codenamed Revolution.

In a recent New York Times article, Nintendo of America's vice president of corporate affairs Perrin Kaplan describes the console as "very, very sleek." The system, which is reportedly tiny, will stand horizontally. Its height will reportedly be no more than three DVD cases stacked flatly on each other, or slightly more than an inch. That makes the console theoretically smaller than Apple's recently released Mac Mini computer.

Although Nintendo has historically selected proprietary media formats, such as the GameCube Optical Disc, for its platforms, the publisher is with Revolution opting for a more standardized medium. The new console will play standard DVD media, according to the company. Nintendo has not yet revealed if Revolution will as a result be able to play Hollywood movies on DVD, but that seems very likely at this point.

At the Game Developers' Conference in March, Nintendo president Satoru Iwata said that Revolution would offer Wi-Fi online connections out of the box and would be backward compatible with GameCube, or able to play GCN software.

According to recent information, Revolution will also be able to play high-definition games and regularly go online.

Finally -- something of a no-brainer given the popularity of the Wave Bird pads -- Revolution's still-secret controller will be completely wireless. Controllers for Microsoft's Xbox 360 are also wireless. Upon hearing this news, puppies everywhere let out a collective cry.

More details to come at E3 2005. Stay tuned.

Depends on what you mean; if you need a better quality cable and plan to use the Revolution one instead, then you're right.

But the games won't become HD resolution... :(

Why does Nintendo always go with the smallest media capacity?

At least it's backwards compatible which is nice. Maybe they can improve the graphics of GC games a bit if that's possible.

Their other messed up formats cost them imo. DVD is fine though...might get the system if they can come out with a decent lineup and people come out with a decent mod chip.

Stop pirating and support the game industry!! We need more sequels and better quality for future generations to come. Think about the future.

3 DVD cases....! Good job m$, make 360 bigger than x1.
I just hope they make the system less "kiddy", they can have Pikmin-type games AND GTA type games.

This is a genius move...

By using regular dvds media, it will mean the revolution can be mod chipped and people will make "backup" copies of their games ;)

So Nintendo is opening the door to piracy at a larger scale. I wonder if they will get a bigger chunk of the market with this move!

It will definately make a bigger splash in Asia... They might have some sort of special burning format so I guess it doesn't mean anything yet.

They will. A huge and often overlooked reason for the PS2's dominance is how easy it was to chip, compared to the X-Box (which tried to disable modded consoles via X-Box Live).

Wow, If it is a fake, someone sure spent a lot of time on that. Although the concept is very cool, I can't see it being one that the cosumers would flock to.

ps. does the vid get cut off?? I d/l and watched it... it was only 6:21 long. does anyone have the ending??

Also this contradicts the quote of size (above)

Yeah it cuts off just as uber Mario is running out of the castle. Definately a cool video.

If this is the revolution, I hope Nintendo can pull of a hybrid VR system without making it over gimmicky like Virtual Boy. I've been dying for one of those ever since I tried that ghetto one over a decade ago where you ran around in some room and tried to shoot the other person.

I have a feeling this is a leaked E3 presentation video. Like the ones they put up on the big screen for everyone to see during a presentation before the designers come out to talk about the system/game and answer questions.

Don't crush my dreams  People thought the two screened DS was fake at first cause of how much battery 2 LCD screens would drain, how pointless it would be, etc. But according to the IGN story, you might be right. Besides, a round clunky system like that would look too tacky in someone's living room. It's like a vacuum cleaner from the 80s.

IGN's link stating it's fake:

Pretty good for a fake though. Some people have a lot of time on their hands.

Nintendo dropped the ball on the previous generation when they say people needed a gaming machine and nothing else, even though everyone else is clearly moving towards convergence.
We'll see what the Revolution will bring to the table being the last console to be launched, next year.

Yeah true but the technology they're proposing in that video is either way ahead of it's time or is going to be very costly. Both of which Nintendo usually tends to stay far from since they like to keep their prices below competition.

Then again the Nintendo Fanboys say there is some questionable content with that video. If you stop at 4:40 you see a GameCube and a slim box thing with a question mark through it. Maybe the ON is a Revolution add on? If so, the whole DVD/Make Games/Play Games seems pretty stupid. Oh and Samus looks way too disproportionate and Mario looks cool but the only way he could look like that is if he was on the Jenny Craig diet with Kirstie Alley. Surprised I only noticed these things the 4th time I watched the damn thing

Pre-E3 2005: Revolution's Size
Just how tiny is Revolution? We take a look. Pics included.
by IGN Staff

May 13, 2005 - Nintendo has described its forthcoming next-generation console, codenamed Revolution, as "very, very sleek." The company also says the machine will be no thicker than three DVD cases stacked flatly on top of each other. And not much wider, either.

Based on these released details, we've created what we believe is a to-scale model of what Revolution could look like.

Above, our Revolution model is sandwiched between a Wave Bird and a GameCube, closely mimicking the role we play in our reoccurring dreams. Readers are advised to take special note of the Ethernet wire connected to the sleek-looking console. GameCube owners have likely never seen one of these special cords, which enable players around the globe to connect online and square off against one another. It's in our photographs purely for effect. Revolution will be joining the online, uh, revolution, according to the Big N. In fact, the publisher intends to make online play a focus of the new console. But it will be doing so wirelessly. The still-codenamed system will support Wi-Fi out of the box, which means that Revolution owners can connect to the Internet wirelessly at broadband speeds.

One thing is for sure: the console is short. Three DVDs thick. GameCube towers over it. Even Wave Bird has a height edge. Nintendo says Revolution can be laid vertically or horizontally on a surface to fit any design space. See the picture below:

Great news. The proprietary (see: limiting) GameCube Optical Discs are out and DVDs are in. Nintendo recently revealed that Revolution would use a DVD-drive to play games. This means that Revolution DVDs will be able to hold a minimum of 4.7 gigabytes, as opposed to GameCube Optical Discs, which store a paltry 1.5 gigabytes. Revolution also seems to support DVD-9 format, which enables data to be saved on dual-layers, effectively increasing the storage capacity to 8.5 gigabytes. Microsoft's forthcoming Xbox 360 console supports DVD-9. Here's hoping Revolution does the same.

Readers will note that our mock-up of Revolution uses a slot-loading DVD drive located in front of the console. This is just a guess. We have no idea why we drew two circles on the right-hand side of the front panel, either, but whatever.

Revolution could end up being Nintendo's smallest console to date. Based on the comparison to three DVDs, the machine could be as tiny as a thick book.

Look at the guts of the machine. Pretty powerful, huh? Legit specs for Revolution have not yet been made public, but we do know the console will be powerful enough to play high-definition games. IBM is supplying an advanced CPU and ATI is creating the console's graphics chip. Given that high-def gaming requires a lot of memory, we're hoping that the system includes 512MBs of RAM standard, just like Xbox 360.

I like how the purposely mispelled nitedo lol

re:load

my guess is the Nintendo "ON" is a the next generation DS. The fact that it shows compatibility with GCN and a box with a "?" would mean that it is backward and cross-console compatible. Also the english translations make no sense, I mean read it, just the words, ignore the fancy images (i know it's hard ;) ) you'll know what I mean. So this must be something that N-asia has either presented to N-USA or will be soon.

Another clue would be that they mention the DS for a longer period of time than the other consoles. I dunno about the base unit, though. That part doesn't look too pertable.

just a hunch...
It just looks like they're mentioning 2 systems not just one.

 lol
Sure. And the Xbox is 4 times as powerful as the PS2. I highly doubt 3rd Party developers are gonna be optimizing for PS3 first and porting down. I see a PS2 effect where the weakest console gets the love first and it's ported to the easily portable machines. Knowing how crappy Sony's devkits are, it's gonna take a while to harness the power of the PS3 even if it's "3 times as powerful" on paper.
Btw, the maker of the revolution ON video has owned up. His name is Paulo Belmonte and he has rendered the metroid and mario videos previously. He's done this kind of thing before (Super Mario Universe way back in 2002) which Nintendo had to dispel since the rumors spread so fast regarding the supposed new Mario game Nintendo was doing :)

Though technical specifications on the Revolution hardware are not yet available, Nintendo says their new console is only two or three times as powerful as the GameCube. "It's not all about having 'turbo power,' " Nintendo's Perrin Kaplan told USA Today. "It's about what you do with it."

Revolution will feature an online matchmaking service ala Xbox Live with downloadable content in the form of a library of archived games. From old school games like Donkey Kong to modern GameCube releases like Super Mario Sunshine, Nintendo says they'll all be available for download on Revolution, though a price, if there will be one, has yet to be determined.
