i thought this was probably the greatest movie i've seen in a while. the choreography was awesome, and the storyline brought tears to my eyes.. absolutely SUPERB movie.. Jet Li was wicked in it, and the director/producer did an AMAZING job with the colors/camera angles.. a masterpiece IMHO!!! 10/10 !!!

I loved it too. After I heard some people pan it...I was expecting it to be so-so....but it really hooked me...especially the visuals. I thought it made absolutely perfect sense.

I watched it in theatres, it looked good but was pretty dry. Plot-wise its just propaganda for a united China.

I thought it would be cool to see this movie stoned... but guess what, it wasnt! It made absolutely NO sense and I ended up falling asleep in the theater.
Maybe I'll rent it one day again.

After Wong Kar Wai Ashes of Time, i'm sick of chinese director going the artistic route. Crouching Tiger sucked balls, Hero sucked arse, and Flying Dagger suct D$%@!!!

I'd agree saying the choreography was superb along with the producers/directors doing a great job with colors, camera angles and any effects, but the movie sorta lacked plot. The entire movie was one story, told over three times, three different ways.
The subtitles definately took away from some of the experience but it wasn't that bad of a movie but it wasn't the greatest either.

This move is not about a united China, it's more about how a happened plot could be so differently when it's told from different people because their own issue. I believe many of you never watched Akira Kurosawa's "Rashomon".

Sorry, obviously you belong to minority, Majority viewers rate the later 3 movies higher than Ashes of Times. just check imdb.com. I've watched all 4 films, I don't know what's all the fuzz about Ashes of Times, just an very ordinary movie.

Sorry, how does Hero have any relationship with Rashomon? They are not exactly different (or contradicted) stories from different person in Hero. What have I missed or forgot?

Hero imitates Rashomon, I don't think there's any argument. Zhang Yimou is a big fan of Akira Kurosawa. Just read any movie/dvd review, reviewer will mention it. I have to say it's pretty obvious. And yes, there's different/contradicted stories from Jet Li/ King/ and the truth, about how Jet Li killed the other 3 assassins.

As I remember it Jet Li and another character both decided to not assasinate the emperor because paraphrasing 'realised China needs to be united.'

That's just very ending, most of the movie is about the same plot from 3 perspectives. Please if you have time, watch it again, or maybe scan it, you will see movie is rendered in 3 colors, that's three views of the same story.
Remember why Jet Li (Nameless) get to be treated by Emperor? Because he killed the other 3 assassins. Emperor rewarded if someone kills 1, he gets to see Emperor within 100 paces, kills 2, he gets to see Emperor within 50 paces. Nameless is the best assassins with sword, he might not has better skills than the other 3 assassins, but he pursuaded the other 3 he has best chances to kill the Emperor.
Now when Emperor ask Nameless how he killed the other 3, Nameless tells his side of the story, this is the first one. Then the Emperor told nameless he's heard otherwise, then the Emperor tells his side of the story, this is 2nd one. the last one, (3rd) is the truth what happened.

But it would be failure for Zhang Yimou, if everyone watch this film as watching IMAX movie.

Ending really has not much to do with the main plot, there was even an argument in China if Zhang Yimou should life the ending to "China nees to be united". This movie is not about if Nameless (Jet Li) should kill the Emporer or not, it's about how he gets close to the Emporer to excute the assassinate. You do realize this is a fiction, right? The movie didn't have much to say if China needs to be united or not except the ending shows the Emporer didn't die, because in history, he didn't die, simple as that.
I have to agree now this film is kinda of failure because it's not straightforward for some audience to understand what's this movie about.

Interesting question. Does art need to be understood by all to be art? Does entertainment need to entertain everybody to be entertainment?
I don't know much about Asian films so I can't compare it to anything in the same genre, but I enjoyed Hero. I thought it was beautifully made, very well-told and enjoyable to watch. I didn't find it overly complex, although it wasn't exactly Die Hard (which I also liked).

I should finish the sentence more completely, it would be a failure to the director, if audience is enjoying the movie in a different way than the one director intended. Many audience like this movie just because of great visual effect and beautiful scenery. I've read some reviews criticizing this movie lack of plotline.

I agree, this movie was mostly pretty cinematography. The fights scenes were okay (except the Donnie Yen vs Jet Li one, that was great) and the story was pretty simple. This movie is definitely NOT an accurate portrayal of history. That emperor was viewed as one of the most tyrannical ruthless emperors ever, not a guy to hesitate killing an assassin. So basically I have no idea what Zhang Yimou is trying to say in this movie if anything. I just watch it for the pretty pictures and the Donnie Yen vs Jet Li fight scene.

He's saying Jet Li's character is a hero..you know, the assassin who decided not to assassinate?
I'm not an expert analyst by any means but I think it was pretty clear that the focus was supposed to be on the character/ideals for 'Nameless' and forget the "inaccurate" portrayal of the emperor. He doesn't matter

I thought Nameless didn't assasinate because the Emperor saw the truth behind his lies and figured him out. The "death within ten paces" but Nameless never got close enough.
