WARNING - RECORDED DVD MAY NOT BE COMPATIABLE WITH OTHER DVD PLAYERS! (from Review Here) (http://www.hat.net/gadgets/audio_and_video.dvd_players_and_recorders.dvd_reco rders/sylvania_dvr90de_dvd_player___recorder/)

If you are purchasing this player to copy old home videos to DVD-R for family and friends, keep looking. DVD-R media recoded on this Sylvania can only be played back on this player/recorder. Other recorders such as Sony's produce DVD-R recordings that can be played virtually on any other DVD player. Nothing in the user manual states this, it took me over an hour of hold time and 4 tech's to finally get this answer.

Why on God's green earth would you purchase a Sylvania DVD recorder that only played discs on this machine for $300? Stay away from this. The cost of decent DVD recorders is dropping rapidly, and most are around this price already. I bought a Pioneer DVR-320 6 months ago at Best Buy for $299. It has an amazingly intuitive interface (something so refreshing compared to most offshore junk you can find these days). It has DV in and VR mode recording so you can watch other stuff on the disc while you are still recording on it, I doubt this Sylvania can do that. And of course you can play discs on other machines with the Pioneer. What good is one you cannot?? IMO, keep away from this pile of junk.

I concur, in my experience (therefore YMMV) Sylvania has been one of the few product lines that have been consistently POS products, from their lightbulbs to their electronics

These first generation units are being sold everywhere for $200 or less. Don't buy one unless you can test it out and return it later if neccesary.

Sam's Club has the Philips DVDR72 model for $200. They apparently are on clearance or something because the price tab was green. I saw plenty of them at the Pickering location but another location I went to (Vaugan) had only 1.
