its a long shot but i'm hoping there is a super xbox guru on this site able to help me out. i posted this on a xbox-scene forums and no one was able to fix it.
here were my posts:

Post:
"k i read up on it and i know error 05 occurs when your HD is not locked and u load up the MS dash but this was not the case.
i was basically updating my cousins xbox with new backups. i use c-xbox and queued 5 games to copy from my PC to the xbox and went away for a bit. when i came back the transfer was succefull and then i tried to load XBMC. the screen just went black. so i rebooted my xbox and got error o5.
i tried numerous times and even tried loading msdash by pressing the eject button but no luck...same error.
any idea on how i can fix this?
maybe his hard drive is unlocked but how can i lock it if i can't even access avalanch.
btw i don't know what chip is in it, all i know is the manufactur date is in 2002 and tehre is a 160gb har drive in it."

Update 1:
"k i tried 3 things today

- ok so i tried a original demo disc but got the same error.

- i opened the xbox and cheked if there were any loose wires but dind't find any.
btw i think the chip used is the duoX2. something of the sort.

- i replaced the HD with the original one that came with the xbox and also still get the error."

Update 2:
"I don't get what can be wrong.
we tried putting in another chip and nothing. cheked the soldering points.
switched the hard drives with an xbox that works.
nothing.
can it be that the hard drive is busted? like there is no power going to the chip?!?
and help."

btw i think the chip in there is a duox2. something of the sort.
someone help!!!!!!!!!!!!

Is there power going to the chip?
I just had an 05 error myself after playing a game.
I had to reload evox (my launcher of choice) using a Slayers Disc, re-lock the drive and re-edit my xbe launcher.
Can you still boot off the DVD drive?

I helped mod another person's Xbox who had this error as well. Check the solder points very carefully, they're not that many and resolder if you aren't sure. Just because the wires stick doesn't mean they're making great contact.

the guy that is trying to fix it for me said there is no power going to the chip.
i'll ask him to try and boot of the DVD drive.
he cheked the solder points and even tried with another chip but didn't work :(

I'm surprised your dude didn't try booting a Slayer's Disc. What kind of modder doesn't have a Slayer's Disc lying around. It's essential equipment for DIY'ers.
If you can boot the Slayer's Disc, then the chip is still working by bypassing the XBox's BIOS. If your Xbox dashboard somehow got corrupted, you'll get those errors even if you turn off the chip. The Slayer's Disc will help get your drive back in shape.
