Islamabad — Authorities arrested al-Qaeda's No. 3 commander, who was a close associate of Osama bin Laden and had a $10-million (U.S.) bounty on his head, and said Wednesday that they are “on the right track to catch the fugitive terrorist leader.

Abu Farraj al-Libbi, who allegedly orchestrated two assassination attempts against President General Pervez Musharraf, was arrested after a firefight on the outskirts of Mardan, 50 kilometres north of Peshawar, capital of the deeply conservative North West Frontier Province, the government and security officials said.

Mr. al-Libbi, a native of Libya who authorities say is a close associate of Mr. bin Laden, was arrested earlier this week, Information Minister Sheikh Rashid Ahmed told Associated Press.

“This is a very important day for us, Mr. Ahmed said. “This arrest gives us a lot of tips, and I can only say that our security agencies are on the right track in the hunt for bin Laden.

He would not elaborate.

The White House said the capture of Mr. al-Libbi was “a great success in the global war on terror and the most significant arrest since Khalid Shaik Mohammed was taken into custody two years ago.

A U.S. counterterrorism official, insisting on anonymity, said Mr. al-Libby was the No. 3 al-Qaeda figure behind Mr. bin Laden and Mr. Mohammed, who was captured in March 2003. The official called this arrest the most significant blow to al-Qaeda since Mr. Mohammed's capture, saying Mr. al-Libbi is believed responsible for planning attacks around the world, including in the United States.

Three Pakistani intelligence officials told AP on condition of anonymity that Mr. al-Libbi was one of two foreigners arrested Monday after a firefight on the outskirts of Mardan.

One of the officials said 11 more terror suspects – including three Uzbeks, an Afghan and seven Pakistanis – were arrests before dawn Wednesday in the Bajor tribal region. The official would not say what prompted authorities to launch the raid or whether it was linked to Mr. al-Libbi's capture.

Sweet.
Can the capture of Bin Laden - and final justice for the horrific crimes of 9/11 - be far behind?

Bin Laden is #1.
al-Zarqawi is #1 in Iraq.. but globally, I don't believe he's been involved much.
Mullah Omar was taliban, not Al Qaeda.

Either way, they've got to capture all of these scumbags and make them pay for their horrendous crimes.

Hey man you never know this guy maybe innocent or maybe the CIA killed his family of something so that he has a beef with the US. Beside the Globe is probally reporting what CNN told them and what the US justice department tells them. Seems like everyday on CNN they make it seem like the US is some innocent virgin and everyone else is just trying to f*ck them.

Maybe Michal Jackson had his son over for a sleepover and now he hates America. Who cares? He's a terrorist.
