ok so I'm working at my first full time job that isn't under the table. I've been working here for 3 years. So I guess I have to pay msp to the government but no one told me this, it is just supposed to come off my paycheck. Well they screwed up here, and they weren't taking it off mine, but everyone else was getting it taken off their paycheck. So I talk to the HR dept and they said sorry but they can only help pay 70% for the past 6 months, the 2.5 years before that I am going to have to pay the government myself. That's about $1500 that I owe, plus 30% of the past 6 months! so now I owe almost $2000 because the HR dept screwed up! I just bought a house 5 months ago and we had our first baby 3 months ago so I don't really have $2000 lying around to pay to the government for msp! they said I should have known that it wasn't being taken off my check but I've never even heard of msp up until a few days ago! grrrrrrr

Just explain your situation to the government...they should be pretty understanding and allow you to make the payments in installments rather than one big chunk.

Congrats on the new house and the BABY! :) :)
The government will always rip and piss you off.
You really have to keep your eyes on them, and seriously watch paystubs/taxes.
I know times are tight, but I'm sure you'll find a way to get through this. Call the government up and explain the situation. The may make some 'arrangement' with you.
Good Luck. :)

ya I do, but I didn't even know what msp was up until a couple of days ago, I had never heard of it until a co-worker wondered why it wasn't being taken off my paystub.

Hey, think about it this way...
you are getting a great deal. HR is willing to pay 70% for the last 6 months. Great deal I say!
Wouldn't doing your income taxes make you away of the problem??

thanks people for the advice about making payments to the government.
ya msp is mandatory in BC if you make over $x (i think like 15000)... as far as I know (which isn't much) it's the basic medical the province gives us? I could be totally wrong, since I only knew about it a couple days ago but that's what some co-workers told me.

not such a great deal really since they were supposed to pay 70% of it for the past 3 years, like they have been doing for everyone else, and then we just get the other 30% taken off our paychecks.

If they were obligated to pay 70% for the last 3 years but didn't, I don't see how they can say, "We neglected to pay it, but now it's too late."
It almost sounds like it's time for a lawyer. Or maybe the government has someone who can put the pressure on your employer. If they were contractually obligated to pay, I don't see how they can weasel their way out of it.
Unless, of course, they were taking the money that would've paid that 70% and just adding it to your check. In that case, it's money that they had to pay out and DID pay out, just to the wrong person. Still their mistake, but they'd be less liable.

basically with msp, my job pays 70% and employees pay 30%.
with mine they weren't paying anything, but they also weren't taking the 30% off my paycheck.
so now I owe 100% for the past 3 years, my HR dept apologized for the error but said they can only go back 6 months and pay the 70% (and of course they will take the 30% off my paycheck). for the 2.5 previous years before that I have to pay 100% straight to the government. I don't make a lot of money so this is really going to hurt us especially with my wife on mat leave for another 9 months.

You're just going to have to tell them that an apology isn't going to cut it. If they failed to pay what they were contractually obligated to, it sounds like they may be in contract violation. It's never fun to threaten your employer with legal action, but it may be necessary.
Can you take it higher? Is it just some lowly HR rep saying, "Sorry, nothing we can do"? Maybe they just don't know what TO do.
It would also be worthwhile explaining the whole situation to a government rep and finding out if they believe your employer is responsible for payment.

basically with msp, my job pays 70% and employees pay 30%.Is that part of your "benefits" at the job or is it the government that says employers must pay 70%? If it's a benefit from your employer, do you have anything from them from around the time you started working that says they'll pay that much? Without documentation of it, you won't have much of a case.

ya maybe I will. in an email from HR they said
"If you aren't signing up with us...you need to sign a waver form saying that you are not interested in signing up with us...and on it you must indicate where your coverage elsewhere is"
so then I emailed back and said show me the waiver I signed saying I pay my msp elsewhere. and then they said
"Not signing a waver does not give us permission to enroll you for MSP. There is an MSP enrollment form which you are reponsible for filling out. This is the only thing that allows Stream to cover you and place you on 's plan."
BUT I filled out all the required forms when I was hired, just like everyone else. You would think they would notice that there is an employee who did not have msp taken off his pay check but didn't sign a waiver stating it was being taken off somewhere else.

What about going to the press? A lot of local papers have one of those roving reporters who tries to "right the wrongs" for the little guy.

Hang on...
You've been at this place for 3 years, and you have no idea what your deductions should be??? Sorry to ask, but how can you be so oblivious when it comes to your paycheque? While I think HR should have automatically deducted your MSP, I'm not sure what the rules are with regards to the program. Perhaps you had to ask them or sign a form?

this is my first real job with benefits and stuff so when I look at my paycheck I look to make sure my benefits are being taken off, the # of hours worked and pay is correct, and my vacation pay is correct, I had never even heard of msp until a few days ago. It is not mandatory by law that the employer pay 70%, but our employer does do it as long as you dont pay msp anywhere else.

Related question I guess. In Ontario, my pay stubs don't include a seperate field for the health premium. Is this built into prov/federal taxes, as far as common displays go? We use ADP.

We use ADP.It's mixed into the federal/provincial taxes withheld by your employer. If your employer deducts too much or too little, it'll be reflected in your tax return at the end of the year.

BTW - It is only 50% in 2004 because it was introduced on July 1, 2004. This year it is 100%.
