There is a clicking noise coming from my PC now and then. It sounds like it's coming from the front which mean HD, CD,or DVD rom. It sounds like a light switch, is not predicatable, and I don't see any side effects.
Can a HD or a power supply make a clicking sound?

Is that bad?
sort of, it means you dont run DIRMS or DISKEEPER LITE often enough. Also, install Buzzsaw Service and GUI.

My maxtor 160 gig I PM for $90 was making the same noise, not sure if diskeeper fixed it or not but I do have diskeeper running. But I did change my case to Antec Sonata, it actually has rubber noise dampening for the hard drive slots. Now I don't hear anything which is quite awesome.

Is that bad?Can be very bad as it may be a sign that your HD is dying. I would go to the manufacturer's web site and download their diagnostic utility.
As always, make sure your critical data is backed up.

Your CD/DVD-ROM can also make that noise; I fixed it by swapping its power rail. Try that with your HD, see if it improves (and be extremely careful while doing it, ground yourself and don't yank too hard on the cord).

Thanks,
I have a feeling it's a WD cavalier that I got a few years back and of course the warranty has expired.
Tried moving the drives, running disk util, and pushing the drive to see if it makes noise under stress. And it keeps clicking but I am running two drives.
I will just have to wait for a good PM on a new drive. Staples is upgrading my computer one peice at a time.

How do you know it's not one of your fans making the noise

Fan is new and it did the same thing with the old fan. The cd and dvd roms are inactive most of the time as I image my cd's to the HD. The HD is about 4yrs old and has allot of read/writes on it.
I am looking at the maxtor 200gb PM. I don't see a comparable price at $115, it seems like a good deal and it's local. I don't need 200gb, 80+ would do. I want an 8mb cache or better though.
Thanks,
Max

I'm guessing you use IDE (ATA) not SATA
I'd go to NCIX.com or Canada Computers and get a SEAGATE ATA-100 80 GB 7200 RPM 8MB OEM
Note that it's seagate OEM.

80 gig is expensive, best to get a 200 gig now, best bang for the buck.
Grab a seagate, try to backup anything on the HD, it may fail anytime. Maxtors seem to have a higher failure rate these days. That's why the retail Maxtor PM deals aren't so great cause of the 1 year warranty.

I have seen all over, seagate HD are the best. And go OEM because you get 3yrs warranty. But why is this so important?
I have had about a dozen HD over my life and the only ones to fail were the ones I dropped. The WD I have not appears to be failing but it's had a hard life.
I just don't see why seagate or an OEM. Am I missing some thing?
