What do you do if one of your neighbors refuse to chip in money to build a fence while every home has put one up?
One of our neighbors is so cheap that they are waiting for everyone else to build a fence so they don't have to. I heard there is law to enforce the neighbor to agree if most home in the neighborhood has one, is that true? Where to find?

i don't think they are obligated to. Its a tricky one, cause if you stick it up on exactly the property line, it half belongs to them, so IF you put on up, make sure it is completly on your line.

Depends on your bylaws, but from what I have heard the most you can "force" them to pay is the equivalent of half of a chain link fence. Hardly worth it, but just make sure they don't go hanging plants, ladders, etc. or painting it after because they obviously don't own any of it...

Just make sure the fence is entirely on your property, and paint their side of it pink. If they paint over it, have them charged.

While I agree that it is the neighborly thing to do, are you sure your neighbors actually want a fence and if they don't why should they have to pay for yours? AFAIK your neighbors are under no legal obligation to chip in for a fence that you want.
In my current house, I wanted a fence so I chipped in and paid for half of the fence bordering my property when my neighbor on the right put one up. My neighbor on the left didn't want a fence so when I finished the job I paid for the fence myself for the other two sides (left and back).
I know at my brothers place he lives next to a seniors couple with limited funds with no interest in a fence, why should they be forced to pay for one because the neighbor wants to throw one up because of kids or a dog?

Good to know, I live in Mississauga and I'm planning on putting up a fence this spring, so it is good to know that I have the "law" at my side.
Thanks for the info.

Has anyone ever exercised such division fence by law? Will it get ugly? Without a fence, we don't even want to put any piece of patio furniture out there because people use our yard and sides of the house as a shortcut to walk by. It is about safety and privacy.

Forcing your neighbour to do anything probably isn't good...but if all the other people living around them don't like it, what are they gonna do? Do they really want to be hated?
What I suggest is to get together with a bunch of neighbours and put the fence up together. Like get quotes from contractors to do many people. This way you can get a deal too. And what you can do collectively is to give your uncooperative neighbour notice under a collective letter from all those sharing a fence with him.
