Wow, I didn't know that X800XT lacks so much compared to 6800 GT. I thought it was close...

ATI released a few new cards that aren't listed (ie X800 XL), though really they've been getting whuped this generation.

I generally ignore 3DMark scores (synthetic benchmarks don't matter) and look to Half-Life2 & Doom3. They're the most demanding engines, and I believe they also cover both popular APIs, OpenGL (Doom3) and DX9 (HL2).

You're not looking at the SLI scores are you? The X800XT beats the 6800GT quite easily for the most part.

wow:

Radeon X800 XT R423 256MB DX 9.0b 500 1000 256-bit 16
GeForce 6800 GT NV45 256MB DX 9.0c 350 1000 256-bit 16

hum...with 150MHz more for Radeon, how can the GeForce be better?

and would a generic 400W PSU enough for the following items?

asus k8v se del. mobo
a64 3000+ cpu
1gb dc ram
80gb sata hdd
aiw x800 xt video card

The same way AMD beats intel with a much lower clock speed :)

The GeForce is NOT better
infact X800XT is superior to the GeForce6800GT
However, when the GeForce6800GT goes in SLI mode (2X of them)
it becomes significantly faster

In directX 9, X800XT is faster in general. In OpenGL, 6800GT is faster. However, 6800GT has more features, SM3.0, so you can play games like Splinter Cell Chaos Theory with more eye candy (High dynamic range lighting).

But GT doesn't support VIVO.

Am I missing something? Second chart, 4x AA, 8x AF, 1600x1200, 32bit:

GeForce 6800 GT, Score: 3856
Radeon X800XT, Score: 3016

Seems significant.. tho I could be misinterpreting that?

I would say no. I have a Thermaltake butterfly 480w...it is not enough for my 3400+ and x800xtpe when overclocked, and not in a way that the PSU drops voltage(lucky for me...and i don't kill hardware with voltage spikes :D ).

Asus has horrible PWM design, and a crappy PSU with an ok board and an awesome card is gonna lead to frustrations in the future, especially if you overclock.

What makes generic PSU's so bad is that they have very low power capabilities when under load for extended periods....in other words, when the get hot, there is no guarantee as to what sort of power they are going to provide(some 500w units will only provide 150w @ 60c). For an average user that does not use thier pc heavily, besides an occasional games, a generic one is ok, but for anything that is going to get more than a hours worth of gaming in one stretch, a generic PSU is NOT the way to go. Go and spend a minimum of $100 on a psu, and if you can spend $200, then please, do! An ATX2.03 PSU will provide all the power your system will need, and you'll be set for an upgrade in the future too!(ATX2.03 PSU's have 2-12v rails as a minimum, as next generation videocards and processors both draw off of this 12v line. With the power demands of both components, you can imagine how much work a lower grade PSU will be put under).

 a bit long winded, but the power you provide to your system is vital for well built, problem-free system. Save some grief.

Should be easily enough as long as the PSU is anywhere decent. You're looking at full load usage of probably 200W max.

From everything I've seen the nVidia beats ATIs line in Doom3 not using SLI. ATI was invovled with HL2 developers and it has a slight advantage on nVidia.

For some reason for that chart, they forgot to add the SLI part. The single 6800 Ultra only scores 2479 for example.

Ahhh gotcha, just look further down the chart and there's the 'ole GeForce.

Prices should also be taken into consideration I think.. I've always been an ATI owner (since before they became so huge).. but when I put together my last system, I couldn't afford a new ATI card.. so I had to settle with the XFX GeForce 6600.. which is actually pretty good in my opinion.. but either way, my point is I just couldn't justify paying considerably higher for an ATI card of near equal performance.

Interesting link! Wish they had more models and such though. Because it really depends on your motherboard too. For my new board, DFI Lanparty NF4, the DFI employees at dfi-street.com recommend it use 480W power supply for it. Found out after both my Antec Phantom 350's died (one due to over heating, the other just died in seconds. >:( ). After getting an Enermax 485W everything was fine.

As I understand it motherboards don't use much power themselves though integrated peripherals do.
