Check it out. That's for the more recent versions of ipod.
Usually different gens mean an upgrade of that model.
For example:
-1st generation ipod was completely horrible and boxy and big.
-2nd generation ipod had the same layout, but better software and less flaws.
-3rd generation ipod had a very high battery consumption but better layout.
-4th generation is alot smaller *refer to site above*
then there are the ipod mini generations:
-1st gen ipod mini only had it in 4gb harddrives and battery life was limited too
-2nd gen ipod mini had alot longer battery life and some change to the colors (i think much more deeper color?) *refer to site above again*
There is this chart that should help u, i've seen it around, just do a google search and you find it.
Hope that helped, cheers!

No. 3g is far right; 4g is in the middle, not a huge difference in size.

It seems that the 2G ipod was actually larger than 1G..unless they were different sizes.
Also yea, the size difference between 3G and 4G is almost unnoticeable. They shaved off very few inches. But a lot of other features made 4G a worthy upgrade from 3G.
However the biggest leap was from 2G to 3G, where ipod was completly revamped, and went from being a toy for the rich and technically oriented to a mass appeal consumer products. And it also did wonders for Apple's market value.
4G, iPod mini and all other introductions have helped that image significantly.

If your a student, best thing to do is check out Apple.ca and buy through their education store. A $249 4GB mini is only $225, with free engraving on the back and free shipping. Haven't checked the 6GB version though. Since I download Audible.com content anyway, I took advantage of their deal. They offer $150 off an iPod if you sign up for a year of the basic listener package. For around $20CAN you get one audiobook plus one Subscription voucher per month. With audiobooks being routinely around $20-$25US, this was a deal to me. I saved on my iPod and my Audiobooks as well.
