Today I went to a nearby Royal Bank ATM machine to do a Bankbook update, and I thought while I was there I might as well withdraw $20. The bill comes out, looks different, I thought it was one of the new ones so I put in into my wallet without a second thought.

When I get home, I wanted to show my little sister the new $20 bill so I take it out to show her. Thats when I realize that this isn't a new $20, it's a really old one, 1979. I took a picture of it and attached it below. Is this still legal tender or should I just go exchange it at the bank? Why did the ATM machine give me such an old type of bill?

lol....why were you so excited about having the a new 20 dollar bill? It's been in circulation for a while now.

The bill is legal tender but maybe you should keep it for the sake of keeping it.

but the security features are worth it, when time come to check each bill and you have a stack of them.

back when I was working at a cashier 3 years ago... I received two mint 1979 $20 bills in one day. I was thinking, damn, those counterfeiters are faking old bills now? -- which I think would be pretty smart because they don't have the same security features as the new bills and are still accepted.

But I put it through all the tests and they checked out. So I kept them. I'm still wondering why every copy I've seen of this bill has been nearly mint.

Here's the back for anyone that's interested, and it is in really good condition. It's actually in better condition than 90% of the old green $20 bills. Maybe they had a really small time of circulation. Edit: sorry the picture is blurry :(

$1 from '73
couple of $2 from the 90's
$5 from '79
$10 from '71
$20 from '79

all in near mint condition (they are folded twice, and the $100 has some writing on it)

should I keep these or use them, in case i need some cash to buy video games or something

Locked away. The Musical ride was 1975.

that bill really isnt very old... and its not rare to get them from a store or an atm. the bad thing about getting them, they are easy to make counterfiets, so there are stores that wont take them.

thats the way it is here anyways.

and dont get your hopes up, its not worth anymore than $20 even if its 'really' old ;)

Haha some of you guys need to stop busting my balls about how old it is.
I made a mistake when I called it "really" old, boo hoo.

Don't you have something better to do than to correct spelling and point out crap like that?

Anyways, let's see some pics of the bills you guys have in collection.

I have a few international bills, but they are not old at all(10 years or less).

Is a 1961 nickel worth anything? The black oxidation makes it look like it might be made out of silver.

If you drop the coin, it will make a different sound compared to 2004 one if it's silver.

I have an old $100, don't remember the year, but it looks like CT money.

Like the queen says, ce billet a cours legal.

why do we still have her on our money anyways.

not meaning to threadjack but i just finished a book on irish history (i am not irish but like to read just about everything) and having her on our money is the equivalent (her representing the colonial monarch) of endorsing an institution responsible for the killing of 1000s of people.

I'm not trying to flame but if you have 2 brain cells to rub together you can read 100s of sources which outline all the terrible violent illegal and immoral things the british monarchy did over the past several hundred years, not including their occupation of ireland.

so what gives...why is she still on our money. Personally I do not want Canada to show any kind of endorsement of that behaviour past present or future.

I agree that it's time to give the monarchy the boot. Particularly with the last two generations of the royal family. These guys are a joke. At the very least we need to get rid of that Clarkson woman.

because last time I checked Canada is a Constitutional Monarchy and the Queen is our head of state. whether you disagree with that is best kept for another thread.

as for the $20 bill..that is hardly old. It shocks me how many people know so little about our currency (i.e. "is it still legal?").

Actually, the nickel was never silver, unless you have one before 1921. The dime and quarter was all silver up to 1967. Then in 1968, they made some of them nickel but there were still silver 1968 dimes and nickels.

In that condition, it is worth 5 cents.

if atilla the hun was a head of state would you just agree mindlessly with it?

and you sort of carried on my conversation here by commenting on it - beside it is related to our money.

The dime and quarter was all silver up to 1967. Then in 1968, they made some of them nickel but there were still silver 1968 dimes and nickels. Not exactly ALL silver. For example, the 10 cent coin was 92.5% silver and 7.5% copper before 1920, 80% silver and 20% copper from 1920-1967, 99.9% nickel from 1968-1977, 99% nickel from 1978-1999 and since 2000 is 92.5% steel, 5.5% copper and 2.5% nickel (basically nickel plated). Talk about devaluing our currency :)
