So, the answer is............
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
It's all depend on the model, I have try on few stand alone DVD player, some just can't read jpg file at all, some can only detect the first 299 photos, as porphyra said, 299 photo per folder and make many folder, some machine work, others not.
Bought the DVD 1000 player form Walmart , I can view 2290 photos with or without any folder.
So, the answer is just depend on the what model you own.
But thanks for porphyra provided the suggestion, now I can burn all my photos in one DVD and view them all, without worrying about the file limit.

i recently used photostory3 (free) to convert 80 pics into a pic slideshow .avi video then used nero to burn it to a dvd (to play on tv dvd player in the living room) and even added music in the background while pics are displayed.

Hi steve.m,
One DVD got 4.7G.What's the max pic can display in one show?
How long will it take to make a slideshow of 80 pic? Is it in avi format after you burn to the DVD?

file size was under 20mb as avi file of pics and music. so probably some incredible number of pics on a dvd guessing a few hundred to maybe a thousand? (depends on pic resolution of course), remember on regular tv you won't be getting any high res 4mp images more like close to 640. I don't have HDTV so i can't experiment with pic resolution and burning.
took about 30 min to go through adding 80 pics to photostory, adding transitions between pics, removing red eye, rotating pics right way up, adding music and preview the show0.
the file size was tiny under 20mb if i remember correctly, i did not realize this when burning it to dvd using nero. d'oh what a waste of a dvd unused space. anyhow i had to burn another copy so i burned it in vcd mode(svcd does not work on my dvd player) on a blank cd.
nero is very versitile too i noticed in setting up dvd menus. sometimes i record stuff from tv with the comp and burn it to a dvd with my own title headings which is a lot of fun.
edit: if i remember correctly, on dvd it was not .avi nero converted it somehow to some strange filename with a .dat extension in a folder on the dvd.
the vcd i burned i never checked what thr file type was, sorry.
edit 2: http://img172.exs.cx/img172/7696/untitled1qc.jpg
i used make video cd and make your own dvd-video since it was a avi file. i once tried make photo slide show(vcd) but found it hard to use. they also have make photo slide show dvd, which i will try some time on a dvd player and a friends HDTV to see if the pics show up as higer res eg 2-3 mp or beyond.

Thx for the fast respond.
So I am lucky to have a DVD player that can view 1000s of jpg file without do any convert. Just drag and drop the jpg files to burn them, and it auto play slideshow from the DVD player.
