My friend gave me a cheque that's addressed in his name. Does he have to sign the back, or can I just deposit in my account using an ATM?

He has to sign because it is made out to him/her. You also 'might' have to sign.
If it bounces, you are responsible for the charges.

Depending on the type of customer you are, the bank might not even take it. Its a 3rd party chq. They'll jsut reverse the chq and send it back to you.
