View Full Version : Shaw upgrading internet connections Extreme 5 -> 7 Mbit

I don't know if this has already been posted, but shaw is going to upgrade the regular cable internet from 3 to 5 mbit, and the extreme from 5 to 7 mbit, (but they are gonna keep enforcing those annoying caps)

What is the point? All you are going to do is reach the cap faster.

Since Rogers imposed their cap. I am going to max out my connection every month just for the heck of it. I never download anything previously and my monthly limit was usually half the cap they imposed.

what is the cap set at for high speed because i've been doing 30gb a month for the last couple of months? also do u need a new new modem for these changes cause i still have one of those really old ones

I think if you have a recent DOCSIS Modem, it should be fine. As long as it is DOCSIS 2.0

I don't know what the CAP is set at for Shaw, but Rogers is set at 60 Gigs a month

The Teryaon is definitely not a DOCSIS 2.0 compliant modem. So you are stuck at 3 Megs. In fact, with these modems, the MAC address has to be registered.

So, if you switch network cards, you will loose your internet connection. You will have to call Shaw to release your IP before you get your connection back. Of course you can release the IP yourself before switching network cards / Computers.

i never got 3Mbs on Terayon, 1.5Mbs or 180KB/s is the fastest download I've seen on my Shaw, so this upgrade means nothing.

At night, my speed is really fast with my Terayon. Will Shaw provide me with a free exchange for the new Motorola's? I've heard of ppl managing to switch it for free and I would like to take that route.

I heard the maximum speed the Terayons are capable of is 3 Megs. When I had mine, it was close to 3 Megs. Until I upgraded to Extreme.

Maybe your service is only 1.5 Megs.

Test your speed here

if shaw is upgrading, not sure what this means for 3web customers. In any case, this can only be good :D. I didn't know DOCSIS sb 5100's could do more than 5mbit though...

Well I'm sure Shaw would have some sort of identification to make sure that only Shaw customers would get the speed upgrade. Otherwise it would be a joke for Shaw users to finance 3web user's speedy connection upgrade heh?

they use the same lines though. I'd be surprised if 3web doesn't get the upgrade actually if this is indeed true.

My regular Rogers Hi-Speed hasn't even been stable for years, never mind at the 3Mb speed limit. I've noticed the service has deteriorated as more people in my neighbourhood got Rogers Internet, to the point where almost everyone has it piped into their homes. That said, I've been using the same modem (white Motorola, think it's a CyberSurfr) since 1999.

Does DOCSIS 2.0 really make that big of a difference, especially if the problem is largely a result of area-based congestion?

The cap is 'supposed' to be 20gb, but I went to 27gb last month so I guess they don't care too much. They only cut me when I did 45gb last summer.

It made a difference to me. The older Terayon and LAN City modems use CDMA and not DOCSIS.

Since you have a Motorola, you were probably on Shaw before Rogers took over. I am not sure about your area, but here in Mississauga, the networks are segmented differently. The older CDMA modems slow down when everyone jumps on the network.

I think they got smarter when DOCSIS was introduced. They had to change the equipment at the head end and probably started using a switched network. Don't get me wrong, it is still slower when everyone jumps on, but it is not as noticable.

For those with the old modems, I called shaw to see what was up. They said the old modems will not see a speed increase but if I brought it in to any "Shaw Retail Outlet" they would swap it out for me for no charge. And yes I purchased the modem about 1.5 years ago.

Sure-- I don't download a huge amount but when I do I would prefer it as fast as possible. So yes there is a point. And I personally wouldn't call their cap "small", it's quite reasonable... especially since I have never come close to hitting it.

Shaw will have completed their upgrading by the end of the week. I checked last night and the upgrade was completed in my area of East Van. I average 854k downloading now.

turanuk
Apr 12th, 2005, 07:23 PM
In van, shaw called me about 39 gigs once, I basically laughed in their faces. The tech guy is hilarious: "if you go over 20 gigs it starts to affect our network". Me: "extreme is capped at 50 gigs." Tech guy: uh let me transfer you back to sales.

Sales: Would you like to upgrade to extreme? Me: that's okay, *click*.

That pissed me off a lot, I was expecting to get cut off so I started to look for deals on telus modems :D. Never came to that, but I'm on 3web now.

My u/l is capped at 120 KB/sec or so. But if let it run that fast it eats away at my d/l speed. So usually I u/l at around 50 - 60 KB/sec when I'm d/l something and when I'm done d/l I open it up to 120 KB/sec
