I would go with the basics first. Check for Spyware and viruses.

1. Download Ad-Aware and Spybot, run tests with new updates.
2. Google.com > Panada Free Online Virus Scan
3. Check after if it works.

Is this a folder with a lot of .avi files in them? Or simply a content rich folder (i.e. lots of movies and pictures).

Could be a shell issue. Its quite common actually. If so then I can tell you what to do, if not then no clue.

The first thing we need to know is what the error message is that you get. On the error screen it should mention something like "click here to see what data this error report contains."

In the data, look for something called "mod name" and lemme know what it is.

There was a version of DivX 5.x that was crashing XP (windows explorer) with SP2 installed.

It's been fixed in the newer versions of DivX.
