I'm a university student living at home and I'm looking for a good credit card. I looked at canrock's comparison at http://www.redflagdeals.com/deals/main.php/holiday/credit6 but it doesnt say anything about students. Will I be eligible for those cards? If not, what would you recommend?

Thanks

like what UB says.

just goto the local campus bank and im sure they will give you a student VISA or MC.

my first year in waterloo in 1998 I got a student visa and MC with no problems.

I got a TD Visa, Citibank Mastercard and AMEX as a student, no problems.

I think the Amex and maybe one of the other ones (can't remember now) had a minimum annual income. I put down my income as the minimum and put employer/source as "Parents and savings" and I got approved :cheesygri

Usually the cards offered on campus don't offer much rewards or benefits. But if you've got a good credit rating, just apply for the ones you really want and most likely they'll give it to you even if you have no income. But of course you can't put no income.... put like $4000-5000. I did that with my 1st CC (PC Financial) when I was 18 and I got it.

I remember getting a TD Visa card with I started university. It had a $500 limit, more than enough, I'd say. I didn't need my parents to cosign it at all.

I have a citibank drivers edge on the way,

just count any rent/tuition fees that you pay out as annual income since your parents are giving it to you to pay or what not.

Im a student and I dont just want the regular student CCs.

I want the best one I can get.

I applied for HSBC Mastercard (have an account with them) and PC Financial for their card.

I hope I get accepted. I put a minimum income down of $15000 (am a full time student) but also put that I'm unemployed at present (although I have part time jobs).

will it work?

I have a Royal Bank student card. The interest rate is stupid like 18%, but no annual charges. I still haven't used it once and don't intend to though.

most credit cards have 18-19% interest. this is fine, just make sure you pay it off every month. i had the royal bank student visa as well back in college

the Capital One Low Rate Platinum MasterCard has no annual fee and 5.9% annual interest rate (0.016% daily rate), definitely worth a look if you want to carry a balance

the Scotiabank ScotiaLine VISA also has no annual fee and prime + 2.5 annual interest rate

hope this helps :)

Others have pointed out how to get one but i thought i'd say this. Having a card that you pay off every month or even never use at all is good to build your credit rating. But don't get the credit card if you plan on carrying a balance on it!! Just don't. Since you say you're living at home, you must be on good terms with your parents. If you MUST get money some how and are contemplating carrying a balance on your CC then suggest to your parents that they loan you the money and set up a repayment plan where you pay them back. They should have (or be able to get) a line of credit at a much lower interest rate than any CC.

10 years ago i was told that it wasn't bad to keep reapplying. Don't think anything has changed since then. EDIT: But the next poster seem to think it is bad.

Has anyone ever been rejected for one of the 'student' cards that all the major banks offer? I thought it was almost impossible to fail on those.

Note that getting declined will lower your credit rating from what I understand. I'll ask one of my loan officer friends to verify.

The low rates on CCs shouldn't really matter at all if you make sure you're diligent in paying off the entire balance each month. Remember that you should be using the CC as a Convenience Card (i.e., I have the money but I just don't want to hand over the cash just right now) and NOT a credit card.

If you have per transaction debit fees, using the CC will let you charge away and leave you with only one debit use charge each month. :D

Around 6 months. I think it was also because I had a PC Financial account for a month already.

if you are a royal bank customer.... i recommend gettin their credit card... you qualify for the student package.... so you get the student VISA which is quite good...

$1 = 1 point

and when you get 3000pts you can redeem for $25 in gift cards.

I agree with eliteblaze. They do ask for School information or Income because I remember it. :cheesygri

I think chances of getting a credit card increases if you are a university student too.

I'm pretty sure you are guaranteed $500 limit at TD if you have an account. I don't remember putting employer information in at all when I applied online. I have been with that branch for about 9 years though, but my friend has an account at scotia, I told him to get a visa at TD because it was almost an instant approval. He did,and within 2 weeks he had a visa as well. I have no complaints except I wish they ahd a rewards program. In a few months I will probably apply for another one where I get rewards. So far I have not kept a balance, but I've used the credit card alot, and just go home and pay it all back through the web interface. It helps since I only have 10 debit transactions a month and if I go over it's a stupid $3 fee or something outrageous liek that. So witha visa everything is simple, cheap and fast.
