wheres the hype??? not here. Buying a celeron Notebook still isnt the best value no matterhow cheap it is. However, you still get 130 bucks off the Pentium M version of the Inspiron 6000
I might be getting that.

its not a celeron, its a celeron m btw.... celeron m is basically a pentium m processor with less cache so its still a very good chip, not every one could afford a top of the line notebook and for this price this is a very good deal

The coupons are a separate deal from the $999 Inspiron 6000. For the $999 deal with $10 shipping you have to go through this link:

According to varies web test, a Celeron M compare to Pentium M at same speed, the "speed" performance different is about 10-15% due to smaller cache.
but the "battary" performance is 10-20% worse as it lack of some Power management feature.
However, the price different should be enough for additional batt. which in turn last for longer. (and a <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> batt. will die after 150-300 recharge cycle, thus you are getting a double) But it's extra weight to carry around.
edit: and I hate to do shopping after the batt. died

i could be wrong but i don't think battery will vary that much, only difference is the pentium m can go into a deeper sleep but most people don't leave there comp running on idle without any programs running. celeron m is still a very low voltage chip

of course there will be a small reduction in speed but it should not be that noticable considering the price difference

celeron is just a bad name to give to this chip, its still a better chip than most and is probably a better choice than a p4

If you're buying a laptop with a 15.4" screen I think about 7 lbs is right. I personally think it's a bit too heavy to carry around but it depends on how you use it and how often you'll have to carry it. The extra resolution and screen size is nice but the tradeoff is weight.

If there's a <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> kiosk in your area you should go take a look. I find the 6000 quite big, unless your sister wants a desktop replacement w/ portability.

The discrete video card is only the x300 though. You would need to look at the 9300 at the minimum for a really good notebook video card.

I just bought my dad the 6000 2 weeks ago. It's awesome. I would highly recommend it. For what you pay and what you get, it's pretty good. I got the 15.4" widescreen with the Pentium M 730. I hardly notice the weight. Battery lasts for about 3:25hr. I would probably buy another for myself if i had some more $$$.

According to Derek, it would be over 7lbs if it's 15.4". Can you give the approximate weight of your 6000? I am going to buy one light but confused by 2 different comments.

<a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> finance is nuts, depending on your credit rating, it could average around 21 percent, however it is simple interest. and on your CC you do get some kind of rewards/points hopefully. Tough one but your CC is Compounding interest. Tough choice, but once you get the computer, you wont care less:)

Don't worry, I'm sure there will be better deals to come in the future. I bought an I6000 last month for $1619 plus free shipping. It differed from the config posted by faibs with a WUXGA monitor vs WXGA, 7200 RPM HD vs 5400 RPM, 730 1.6GHz/533MHz FSB Pentium-M processor vs 1.4GHz 715A 400MHz FSB, Intel 2915 a/b/g vs Intel 2200 b/g wireless card. On the plus side for his config, he got the DVD burner vs the combo and got a free bag but overall, I think my purchase was a better deal.

You won't see as big as a jump from 256->512MB
so I won't do it personally, unless you really need it (CAD, etc.)
If you need something to meet the upgrade, look for other stuff (batteries, better screen, bigger HD, DL DVD?)

Also the $100 off coupon that they apparently used is not valid for this promo, the first excuse was that coupon was NOT out then, I corrected him and advised it has been out for 9 days. Then the story changed to not valid with an expired promo, etc. The ONLY way he is willing to match the deal is with an order # or quote # - if anyone can PLEASE provide would be great!

The Intel graphics aren't too bad, they use very little power and they support DirectX 9 which is useful to maximize performance with Longhorn. They aren't too bad for older games:

http://www.extremetech.com/article2/0,1558,1617355,00.asp

As for the screen, I got the WUXGA and it's awesome to have to so much room. The fonts are small but they can be adjusted and text with ClearType is simply stunning. Regardless, the WXGA screen has the worst viewing angle and is the least bright out of the three available models, so I would go with WSXGA+ at least.

Weird - mine shows in shipped on Thr Mar 24th and for the past 5 days the tracking info with Purolator shows that as the last activity - something about "LINE ACTIVITY in the US" - no further updates.

I called Purolator a couple days ago after the holiday for update, and she basically told me the same info as on the web.

Was hoping to have it by now, ah well, maybe by the end of the week.

don't mean to threadcrap or anything but wouldn't it make more sense to get a "centrino" laptop (this is the one that allows for wireless access right?) i am contemplating getting one of those but they are quite pricey at the moment $1500 +. I would like one of those though so I could sit at a coffee shop, surf and have coffee at the same time but spending close to $2K is kinda unjustified for me right now. i would like one though. :cheesygri

(thats what happened for my router and printer)

It arrived this afternoon. I guess the lesson here, is while the tracking may not be up to date, the unit is still being sent!

Anyways, time to get it setup, hopefully worth the wait!

If you order the 6000 with a Pentium-M processor and an Intel wireless card, you'll get the Centrino sticker.

haven't tried it but doesn't that run close to $2K??

Yeah his quote gives you quite a bit of additional stuff you can't price that low online! E-mails FAIBS - he hooked me up!

I received mine 2 days ago. $1502 after taxes & $10 shipping

Free 8x DVD burner, 60G HD, 512imb RAM and a nice nylon case. I didn't get the extra warranty which I should have, I am very happy with it. Dell is doing a very good job these days.

What's your secret? I would definitely (if the choice is present) forego the harddrive upgrade for the DVDRW-/+!

I'm waiting for them to have a more 'appealing' offering; it seems the weekend thing comes and goes with enough frequency to justify a little wait longer.

PM FAIBS - He has a quote for like $1429 which gives you the burner, 512mb ram, 60 gig, 3 year Complete card warranty, etc.

How important is the D/Port? There's an option to remove it and it saves like $279, but I don't know how much help it is. I know it has a bunch of (extra?) ports, but if the laptops themselves (I'm looking at a D610) come with 'em then I see no reason why I need one. Thanks in advance!

Not to important, unless you play on using the 6000 strictly for desktop only, or need a legacy port. The I6000 includes 1 Cardbus slot, 4 USB 2 ports, 1 4-pin IEEE 1394 port, 1 VGA out, 1 S-Video out and 1 SD-media reader.

Yeah, I just took a look at Dell's site and they've got all the specs for the D610 listed under there. I don't know why they didn't have them listed at their Premier site, but whatever. I've got a few more questions here (http://forums.redflagdeals.com/showthread.php?p=1505263#post1505263) concerning the D610, if you could help me out I'd greatly appreciate it. Thanks, and sorry for de-railing the thread a bit.

Sorry, I didn't realize you were talking about the D610. I only have the I6000 so I don't think I can help you. However, you might want to check out http://notebookforums.com/ as they have an active Dell forum and I've noticed a couple of D610 user reviews.

I have a D600 from work and I like it. D610 is the upgraded version of D600. If you don't want the widescreen, you will love D610.

ps. I love my I6000 too :)

Hi. Does anyone have any suggestions on a good setup that is available now (May 5, 2005) on Dell.ca for about $1500? I have a corporate discount and won't mind getting one for some classes and some consulting work on the side..

Does anyone know if I can work financing in with my corporate discount?
Thanks
John
