Using 2 of the $30 off coupons, the total comes to $419.95. It also comes with a $50 MIR so, altogether the monitor is about the same price as the cheapest ones at FS or BB.
This monitor is supposed to be amazing, ordered mine this morning, I'll see when I get it...

If you have a sony card, you can get even more off. (sony points, plus double points)
That's what I did. Games look great on it. (native res of course) Else it's chunky like the rest. Very nice looking monitor!

didn't sony mastercard change their policy?
i think it used to be if you bought from a sony authorized retailer you could get double sony points, but now it is only from the sony store, or sonystyle.ca?
btw does that monitor have dvi output?

Listed at 479.95 in Ottawa, but it's OOS. Otherwise, ~370 for this LCD is pretty OK deal.

Fantastic montior! Sony's XBrite technology (also known as XBlack) is amazing for home use (no glare if used in a not-extremely-bright room). However, 17" is a bit small for my tastes; if they came out with a 20-24" I would buy it in a SNAP! :D
Just go to Staples, and notice the BIG BIG BIG difference between a HS74 and any other monitor they have on display.

The big difference in my opinion is just that they have a glass in front of it. The glass makes it look better than it really is.
But to each his/her own.
That being said, you can buy a fellowes 17" screen protector if you want a glass between the lcd and your eyes.

i have the Sony 19" monitor...
got it 2 months ago in Staples for $470...
the monitor shares the same style with this one.. but with no Xbrite...
but i still like it... it's a great monitor....

I'm using the Sony 19" one right now too. I got it for 599.99 - 100 MIR..so 580 incl taxes or so. I was debating about the 19" and the 17" Xbrite. Too bad my 19" is only analog.
It is still a beautiful monitor. It's going on clearance now because of the new models. I personally prefer this model more.

Err. Seen the monitor in person? It's not glass, nor is it a screen protector; it's a special brightness-enhancement glaze that Sony puts on the LCDS during production. Try running your fingers through the monitor the next time you're in the store and you'll see what I mean.
Putting a normal piece of glass in front of a monitor does nothing to the contrast/brightness of the monitor.

Yea, DVI really makes no difference. I'm using DVI on the monitor now. I read that getting a DVI cable with an LCD is rare and a DVI cable does come with this monitor. That is a nice perk in itself. It is however it was a google pain to find the correct monitor drivers. (official and latest) Of course P&P works too...

Oh wow, DVI cables are like $50+ at FS and BB, so that should make this deal even hotter.
IMHO I think that DVI makes a difference. If you put your face up close to the screen and switch between D-Sub and DVI, you will notice a bit of blurriness in the pixels of text with D-Sub.
+ You don't need to adjust any settings in DVI, which is fantastic for just plug and play.

How does this compare to the 17" <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> LCD that was on sale a while ago? I'm only starting to look at getting an LCD so not too much flaming please.

As posted, this display has X-Brite technology. You can see it on most modern notebooks right now; it's a glaze over the LCD screen, enhancing brightness and contrast. Sitting next to next with another non X-Brite display this monitor will blow you away.
So yes, this performs much better than the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a>. Or any other 17" on the market (with 16ms).
Pictures are amazingly crisp, colors are bright as hell. There are reports where users need to turn DOWN the brightness because it is too vivid!
I am personally waiting for the HS75P, so I can get two of them; the HS74P has too fat a bezel for dual monitoring.

The demo of the monitor I saw, it seemed like a glass to me. It was a hard surface. But perhaps we're talking about two different monitors here.
I put a fellowes glass protector in front of a 712N when I had one, to me it looked like, or even better than the demo I saw at the store.

Might be a different monitor, :).
If you touch the screen of this monitor it will ripple like any other. It just looks shiny.

Who buys a cable from the big rip off stores anyway? Well I'm sure there are people who do, but I'd like to think most members here are smarter than to do that. I wonder if they try to sell you extended warranty on a DVI Cable. ::lol::
For those looking for a DVI cable, try Canada Computers or your local computer store. CC has them starting at $24. Only if you're thinking of returning it, should you buy from BB or FS.

Why would you get flamed for asking a legit question? If you were saying how this monitor 'just sucked,' that's another story :cheesygri

The picture quality on the Sony is top notch. The blacks are true black and the colors are very vivid. That being said, the "coating" does create reflections when ther is overhead or back lighting. After some time it gets very annoying, IHMO....
Interestingly, NEC is now carrying a similar monitor with "Opticlear"... http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=&langid=EN&dept=1&sku_id=0665000FS10057528&catid=22334&newdeptid=1

Bought this monitor back in October for $590 after MIR. They are clearing out the 74 model because the 75 model (http://www.futureshop.ca/catalog/proddetail.asp?logon=L&langid=EN&dept=1&sku_id=0665000FS10056690&catid=22333&newdeptid=1#) is out.

IMHO the HS75 looks like... poo. However, I haven't seen it in person but judging from the online pics it seems that Sony got -too- creative. The thin bevel is a big plus, though.

I just realized I haven't exactly answered your question. Although part of the reason, is that I haven't tried either monitor so I was hoping someone who has can give you a more accurate opinion.
If you're referring to the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> E173FP, the Sony is better. The <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> E173FP is more of a middle class monitor, and the Sony monitors are on the higher end of the scale. At least as far as TN+Film panels go, anyway. The price reflects this difference. There are very few TN+Film panels that might be considered better than Sony's line of LCDs, and such a monitor is the usually more expensive Samsung 710T.
Also, if you're read my post on the E173FP, I stated you're likely to get one of three (or four) possible monitors. I'm pretty sure Sony manufactures their own LCD panels, and don't use seperate panels in the same model. This panel is better than the average quality of what you'd get in the E173FP.

:( - got an email from Staples today saying that they didn't have the monitor in stock. I guess this deal was too hot, even for them...
