Another day, another deal.
Word in the Day 3 thread is that Day 4 will be a <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> DJ 5GB for $199. It seems pretty reliable, but we'll find out for sure in a few hours.
Here is the RFD link:
<a target="_blank" href="http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=CAqD7bLWUPI&offerid=86293.353556446&type=10&subid=">10 Days of Deals</a>
I'll be updating this post at 8am, hopefully with the details of the deal. Until then, get some sleep.
<b>Update:</b> The whole DJ line is discounted! <b>Day Four, March 10:</b> As it turns out the rumour was true, but didn't tell the whole story! Today's deal is the an across the board discount on the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> DJ line. Take a look:
Pocket DJ 5GB $199 (reg. $249)
DJ 30GB $269 (reg. $349)
DJ 20GB $249 (reg. $299) (http://click.linksynergy.com/fs-bin/click?id=CAqD7bLWUPI&offerid=86293.353556446&type=10&subid=)
I have a 1st generation 15GB DJ and have been very happy with it for over a year. I'd have no problem recommending them.

yeah, considering the recent price drops from apple and creative if that prediction of the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>dell</a> 5 gb holds true, well, we are looking at another lame sale today.
now 150$ would be hot, and i'm sure <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>dell</a> would still be making a killing.

Agreed $150 would definitely get my attention, I'd highly doubt it thought. But for $200 I'd stick with a Ipod mini. better battery life, better looking, and better handling... for those how've never played with an ipod, their wheel control is amazing...

$200 is certainly too expensive. Someone already posted the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=32 target=_blank>Chapters</a> are selling the 4GB iPod for $160 (after stacking 4 coupons for $10 off $50) in a different discussion thread.

Here are the prices in case you guys can't install flash @ work (like me):
1) 5GB Jukebox - $249 >> $199
2) 30GB Jukebox - $349 >> $269
3) 20GB Jukebox - $299 >> $249
The 30GB seems like a pretty good deal if you were planning on getting an IPOD or and IPOD Mini even @ 249, you get a whole load more space for $20 more? Don't know much about HDD based players since i got (and wanted) a flash based for the gym, (mainly for cardio and $$$ reasons).

I agree with the consensus here, the mini is the much better choice. Also, not sure what type of software the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> comes with, but iTunes is well designed.

I got the DJ20 in December, and love it. Nice look and feel; have had no problems at all. While the DJ comes with Musicmatch software, I had done some reading in DJ owners forums and decided to purchase Dudebox Explorer, which is a software application designed specificially for DJ's. It cost me USD 25.00, and is made by Red Chair Software. Great software (look and feel of windows application with drag and drop etc.). All in all, very happy with my purchase. :)

On the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> US website, they include not just the dock, but also a slipcover, earbuds, AC adapter and USB cable.
The Canadian website states that the dock is included, but nothing else. So I called, and the CSR said it comes with the dock, earbuds, AC adapter and USB cable. Since I have a fairly new couch/loveseat, I don't really need the slipcover.

janmcg

Can store files, and record things using small microphone, on DJ20. I also got the FM tuner component when I bought mine, which meant that system also included a remote control.
ZenOps
Mar 10th, 2005, 09:33 AM
You can store files, which makes the 30Giger a decent deal if you were looking for something along the lines of a really big USB key or a small portable harddrive.

I don't think it's available on the base player...you need to get one of the remotes to access the feature. Can still store files on the unit without any additional accessories.

If you are gonna pay $200+ for a player, you are better off to get some quality headphones. The ipod buds are better than DJ's, but they still suck. Go get a pair of Grado SR-80, they are very good for the price. If you prefer buds, try the Sony Frontopias.

I have both the DJ20 and apple mini 4g (older model - new one came out 2 months later  ). Very happy with both of them except the mini's battery life is too short. However, no longer an issue with the new model.
My wife mainly uses them. She actually prefers the DJ interface over iTunes. Likely because we had the DJ first and she is use to it. The included Apple ear buds are crap. She bought new ones for $70 (Apple) but still didn't like it. The $70 buds had very nice mids and highs but very little base. She now uses the stock DJ ear buds for her mini. Mids and highs are not as nice as the $70 ones. However, it had much better base which suites her listening needs. I personally also prefer the DJ ear buds over the $70 Apple ones.
DJ is the much better deal. However, the mini is more attractive and the click wheel is very cool.
My DJ20 came with a remote and a protective cover. The 30g with an included dock is a great deal (not sure if it also comes with the remote). Initial price of Apple minis are attractive. However, it comes with bare bone accessories. That is where Apple makes its money back. You are basically forced to buy new ear buds.
If you are image conscious (like my wife), get the mini. Value wise (especially when you take consideration of accessory costs), DJ wins hands down.
BTW, I was glad that she didn't like the $70 Apple buds. Being a RFD member, I was pretty upset she spent $70 on it. She could have bought some other name brand with probably better quality for less. However, it's the image thing (white buds). She did gave in to DJ ear buds because of the preferred sound. The Apple buds were returned to Compucenter and they charged a 15% stocking fee
As a side note, one of the DJ buds stopped working after 4 months of use (likely wiring). It was replaced hassle free under warranty. Hopefully they are reliable in the long run.

For headsets I like the sony S2's, they are over the ear, not in ear so they are quite a bit larger but still semi-portable. With either the Ipod or <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a>, the included in-ears are really very cheap.
Axims are nice, but tend to have audio that is not loud enough for most audiophiles. You have to find a player that allows pre-amp abilities, and at that the most you can probably pre-amp without distortion is maybe 6db.

the 5GB one is a pretty good deal, just like the Rio Carbon for $200 few weeks back. it's comparable to Zen Micro @ $275. 1gb more disk space than 4gb mini, battery doesn't last as long as the new mini though. if you want go with the new napster music rentall, it's supported after firmware update

Hey...
My brother has the 5GB DJ.. I think it's the second version of it ? either way, its sick.. a couple of my friends have the ipod and we compared them... I like the DJ better, it looks sleeker. I personally don't like all the white that the ipod has, plus the interface is way better on the DJ and the display is sharper and finer, it shows more words/letters on the screen at what appears to be a higher res... i could be wrong... the battery life on the DJ is awesome too, i think it's better than the ipod. I just can't decide if i want the 5 which is suuuper small... or the 30... bigger but.. 30GB.. wow...
is this a limited time thing ?

Sadly, you need to install the DJ drivers and and the DJ Explorer software in order to access the data files. Hopefully they will come out with a firmware upgrade in the near future that will change this.

I used the digital belkin transmitter. It's awesome. You can set it to any FM station (digitally) on the transmitter itself and then just tune to that station. Obviously you can't take over any major radio stations (103.5, 1071...etc, although that would be cool..lol). The sound quality was amazing.. I think the belkin one is pretty standard, you can use it on an IPOD too i believe... I saw it on display in a store in the IPOD accessory section..

and thanks for the deal post. I went for the DJ30. $270 for 30 gigs was hard pass up.
And I agree, this limited-time deal isn't appreciably better than the various no-pressure iPod mini 4GB deals... But the 30 gig seems alot better than the iPod deal.
... And the iPods are sooo trendy... at this point, I think I'd even pay a bit extra just to NOT get an iPod (but that's just me personal stupid peeve)

Odd, the 2nd gen DJ has a shorter 12hr battery life. My 1st gen is 16 hrs but bulkier. I would pay extra and get the 4g mini over the 5g DJ b/c of mini's 18hr battery life. The best deal is still the 30g DJ and that would be my pick. It is not trendy like the Ipod but better value and well built.
If image is everything, then get the Apple. Anything non-Apple are considered knock-offs or cheap imitations by Ipod owners. Personally when it comes to electronics, I only care about quality and value. The 30g DJ is best bang for the buck!
Also, there is a free downloadable software from <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a>. It is very user friendly. It is drag and drop. I'm sure you can use it to store data.

is that camera software interpolated or is that the true megapixel?
True megapixel. Check out a review of the camera here (http://www.steves-digicams.com/2004_reviews/cx7300.html).

now im confused..
do i get the new apple mini ipod 4gigs 18batt life.. at 225+tx
or the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>dell</a> DJ 30gigs but 12batt life at 269$+tx grrr
why cant the apple ipod 30gigs photo be at 269+tx hehe
I too was looking to get a mp3 player after my old cd mp3 player died.
Almost bought a apple mini, but glad I didn't. The <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> DJ30 with 30GB HD is just too hard to pass up. I want the best bang for the buck and this is defintely it. It is really strange that a few years ago, I would have never bought anything from <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a>, but now their agreesive pricing stragegy is really changing things around. My last two computers are from <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a>, I have the Axim, as well as a laptop and now the DJ, so far, haven't had to deal with any warranty issues.
Also for those who are thinking of using this as an external hd, beaware that you need to install <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> DJ explorer on a computer before it recognize it.
Wonder if the dock that came with my Axim will fit this?

Too bad we don't get the kind of deals that dell.com has. Right now, they have a the following sales on LCD panels. Mind you, these are US prices but with our strong CDN$, it makes for a really good deal.
<a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> Ultrasharp 2001FP 20.1" Digital LCD for US$487 shipped.
<a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> Ultrasharp 1905FP 19" Digital LCD for US$358 shipped.
<a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> Ultrasharp 1704FPV 17" Digital LCD for US$244 shipped.
with an exchange rate of 1.25, these work out to:
CDN$608.75, CDN$447.50 and CDN$305, respectively. Pretty good deals I'd say.
Thoughts?

Very true. My laptop, Pocket PC and now MP3 player are all from <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a>. Comparing prices and features, I couldn't find a better deal from a competitor for any of them.
As a side note, a fairly good resource for all things <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> DJ is http://www.delldjsite.com .
Also, though there is no official support for Mac OSX, there is this:
http://www.wentnet.com/projects/xnjb/index.html
So Mac users may still cash in on this deal.

Has anyone compared the 30GB model to Creative's NOMAD Jukebox Zen Xtra 30GB?

I heard people say their mp3 players can also play videos. Is this true? Can this one? The lcd doesn't look colour so I wouldn't think so.

Now you mentioned it, the DJ explorer is what I use. It is downloadable from <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=168 target=_blank>Dell's</a> website for free. Very friendly interface. It is drag and drop. There is no need to pay extra for Dudebox Explorer.

www.zdnet.com gave both Creative and <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> comparable good reviews. Personally, I prefer <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=168 target=_blank>Dell's</a> looks over the Creative. Also, I think the Nomad 30g are over $400.

Interestingly, quite a few US sites has the Nomad 30GB for less than US$200. I guess I'll pass on this one.

i wouldn't get your hopes up for that price. more like 339$ i would imagine if one shows up in the 10 day sale.

For the ppl who bought one, what is the estimated date did you guys get for you DJ? Mine says March 22,05. Kinda slow in my opinion especially from <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>dell</a>.

the estimated date is high so as not to create and unreasonable expectation *just in case*.
i'm in ottawa, ordered 2 LCDs on day 2, they were shipped within 36 hours. should be here monday i would assume.

How reputable are these stores? Don't forget shipping and possibly custom/duties might kill the deal.
Warranty is another issue, and the item may be refurbs too.

Just thought I'd let people know that I checked the status of the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> DJ I ordered and the status is 'shipped'. So I'm assuming I'll have it early next week.
