I have a Zire 71 and the SD card only shows up thru Palm Desktop when installed in my Palm (ie. it is a little window inside of the program install GUI). I understand that on newer Palms (e.g. T5) they are seen as storage devices that you can move programs on an off. I am not sure whether the card shows up as a (seperate) device.

The handheld shows up as a 'Mobile Device', but you must have ActiveSync (ppc) or Palm Desktop (palm) installed in order to see the said device.
To my knowledge only the T5 can be used as a storage device without any additional software at the present time.
The expansion cards such as Memory Stick, SD or Compact Flash will show up as a folder inside the Mobile Device once the handheld is connected to your pc.

I had a Palm Tungsten E for about a month and half but was upset about the performance so I got a <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a> Axim x30 instead (mid). I am extremely satisfied with the <a href=../autolink/redirectpage.php?linkid=167 target=_blank>Dell</a>.
To answer your question, like rai_dei, a PPC will show up as "Mobile Device" in My computer, whereas with Palms, it doesn't act like a USB HD, unless you have the Palm Tungsten T-5 (which has an impressive 512MB flash, too bad it has only bluetooth for wireless).
If you are comfortable with using computers, I would go for a PPC, I find that Palms are better suited for people who aren't "power users" with computers (ie: does not like to tweak anything [registry, 3rd party progs or overclocking], buys computers stock from FS or BB and does not attempt to make it better), but does not have any advanced features or any (well, few actually) custamizable options.

If you are comfortable with using computers, I would go for a PPC, I find that Palms are better suited for people who are functional with computers, but does not have any advanced features or any (well, few actually) custamizable options.
sorry, but I dont get your statement here...If i'm comfortable with computers, I should get a PPC? because Palms are better suiter for people who are functional with computers?

Well you can't really fit a tablet PC in your shirt pocket can you...
"Is that a TabletPC in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?" :cheesygri
Clies are good if you do go for a Palm, best screen and features. However, PPCs are a bit better at multitasking
Either of the platforms will need additional software to be used as a "Mobile Device", so it comes down to platform preference and functionality really.
