I keep getting code 19 errors which prevent me from connecting many USB devices such as mp3 players/data keys.
The item will mount briefly then disappear. The code 19 error is a registry error.
Code 19
Your registry may be bad. (Code 19)
To check your registry, click Check Registry. If the registry is bad, Windows will restart your system and go back to a previous registry that is good.
I tried searching for these topics on Google. Not much help; the best solution was to go to a restore point, but my restore points are all newer than the problem's debut. I tried deleting some parts of the registry, based on users' comments, but it didn't help. Is there anything I can do? I'm assuming that reinstalling XP will fix the problem. I hope I won't have to reformat my drive.
Any help appreciated.

You have a filter driver thats causing the issue.
Try this. I took this from our internal KB. Its not available on the microsoft site as it is part of an internal SRX article.
1. Click "Start" and click "Run..".
2. Input "Regedit".
3. Locate the specific registry branch in the left pane.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\Class\{6BDD1FC6-810F-11D0-BEC7-0
8002BE2092F}
4. Please check if there is registry key named upper filter or lower filter in the
right pane. If so, please right click on the key and choose delete.
Please delete the USB device from Device Manager and reboot the computer to check the
issue.
If the problem persists, I suggest you take the following steps to send me the
registry key for further research.
1. Click "Start" and click "Run..".
2. Input "Regedit".
3. Locate the specific registry branch in the left pane.
Those are for USB. Hopefully you have that key in your comp
If you dont have that key, then you need to run mpsreports for me so that i can look at the LOG files,

Thanks guys.
Suresh, I did something similar already, and all it's done is stop my burners (DVD, CD) from being recognised as burners- now they're just recognised as read-only drives! :)
When I get to my gf's computer (the one affected) I'll try out what you said and get back to you. Thanks a lot!

I actually have THREE copies of that key. One of them had Upper filters. I deleted. Am about to restart.

I've had great success with repairs (its a living). It'll fix most things wrong with the OS, including registries. Its worth a shot before a wipe. :)

Didn't work. Still the same problem- the mp3 player is recognised for an instant, then disappears! :(

Here is the tool that I told you about.
http://download.microsoft.com/download/b/b/1/bb139fcb-4aac-4fe5-a579-30b0bd915706/MPSRPT_SETUPPerf.EXE
Please copy it to the hard drive and double-click it. After it is done it will save a file to this location on your hard drive: C:\WINNT\MPSReports\Setup\Reports\cab.
The MPS Reporting Tool is utilized to gather detailed information regarding the current configuration of your system. The data collected will assist me with fault isolation. The reporting tool DOES NOT make any registry changes or modifications to the operating system. Average completion times for the MPS Reporting Tool MODE 1 are in the range of 5 to 15 minutes It is required that the currently logged on user have Administrative rights in order to allow for proper operations of the MPS Reporting Tool. If you have any questions regarding the usage or operations of the MPS Reporting Tool consult with me and I will assist you.
Send me a link with the .cab file when done.

Thanks, I'll have to look through my stuff to see if I have Norton System Works; I seem to recall I got it bundled with something years ago, but it may have been the Mac version.
