itunes software for ipod

So I formated my computer the other day and installed my ipod software and it erased everything on my ipod! It's not that big of a deal since I still have everything on my computer, but does anyone know how I can avoid this problem in the future?

There's an option within iTunes to prevent it from automatically updating...When this option is enabled (which it is by default), it simply synchronizes your iPod with whatever's in the library...and if it was a fresh install, that would mean nothing was in the library, therefore erased everything...
