THe missus is off to Portugal for 8 days starting Monday.
We have a digital camera and she's bringing a back up set of batteries but I want her to bring the charger just in case.

Portugal is 230V 50 Hz.

Can I just plug the charger into a voltage adaptor?

check with manufacturer if the charger can accomodate world voltages. with my canon digital rebel it can and all i need is a cheap plug adapter.

Should be written on the adapter itself. Look at the voltage range rating.
If it says 110~220V, you're fine, yuo will just need the plug adapter.
Otherwise, you will need a transformer.

Just take a look on the power brick or the body of the charger. If it says 100-240 V, then you're fine. If it says 100-120V only, then go get the Sanyo charger from Costco

Input 120VAC 60Hz 6W

Guess I'm S.O.L.
