Gaahhh this is driving me crazy. I got a USB IrDA thru Ebay a couple of days ago. I have been trying to install this on my computer to even see if it works and I have been unsuccessful so far! :( I am running XP pro on my computer so I would expect (and I was told the same thing from the seller) that I should be able to just plug and play.... not so. When I plug it in, I get an install driver screen... no problemo the seller sent a disc containing drivers etc for it. I install the drivers, and no luck, computer says device not recognized.

If I restart w/o the device plugged in, install the drivers and restart, still not recognized. So I thought maybe it is the device, so I try my USB with a flash drive... now it is not recognized too (last time I used it, it worked fine)! :O I have tried both items in several different ports (Front and back; ones that I currently have functioning devices eg. camera, scanner plugged into) and still no go for either devices! :( Recently I decided that maybe the problem is that the IrDA screwed up the flash drive driver so I do a system restore to a time that I am sure preceeded the IrDA but still nothing, neither are recognized. I have also tried both USB devices on a second computer (laptop running XP home) and still the same result not able to install using the disc or windows. Now I am stuck, can anyone offer suggestions?

I don't have a IrDA but I have a bluetooth adapter. You should have been able to just plug it into the USB while the computer is on and WinXP should have all the necessary drivers for it. You don't need to install your own drivers.

But since it's not working for you. Try going the the manufacture of the IrDA and see if they have new drivers?

yeah I forgot to mention that I did do a search for more recent drivers online and I found out that the device is quite obscur! :( I think I did manage to track down some drivers from the chip manufacturer, but after installing them I got the same result. They go on to say that the IrDA has had some conflicts with "improper installations of SP2" so they recommend uninstalling everything and then reinstalling SP2>driver>etc. Sounds like a red herring to me, but I guess I would like to fix this so I am going to have to try the SP2 reinstallation.

I doubt reinstalling SP2 will solve the problem. Take a close look at your USB drivers. Maybe they need an update.

Also try getting a PCI USB adapter preferably USB 1.1 (because no drivers are needed for 1.1) and see if the devices work.

wouldnt the most recent drivers be installed on winblows regular updates? I know that it is naive to believe this, but I thought that i woulds ask before I go out to look for em.

btw the IrDA is USB 1.1 if that makes any difference!

My friend has a similar problem with a USB2 device. Interestingly, it seems this particular device needed more juice than his USB ports can supply - kinda of weird! (Yes, it does work on another computer)
