I found a cheap package from Vancouver to Las Vegas - 250 bucks per person for 4 nights. But once taxes are added, it's basically double the price. And out of what I want to spend for a weekend getaway.
Is there any way to avoid these taxes? Charter or something?

No. Get used to it if you want to fly.

Rat bastards.
How can it be so cheap to fly internationally in Europe, and be so freakin' expensive here?

Bellingham, hey? Why not! I only thought of Seattle, and that's just too far.

Took me a whole minute.
As for original poster: Why don't you fly out through Buffalo? Flights are in the $150-200 USD with all taxes.

Probably because he's in Vancouver, and would have to actually fly cross country to get to Bufalo in the first place. ;)

Most of the taxes are levied at the federal level. The only fee that varies by airport is the AIF (PFC in the US). The AIF for major Canadian airports ranges from $5 to $15. All domestic & transborder flights are subject to GST. When you fly from Canada to the US (as the OP wants to do), you get nailed for taxes from both the Canadian and US gov't.

You know I didn't even realize just how much tax there is on airline tickets. Just had a look at my ticket to LA in a week. $350 + $100 in taxes.
No wonder when you see prices on websites they always show you the taxes included price.

Aeroplan reward tickets are nailed in the same way with taxes. Here's the breakdown of taxes on a recently booked YYZ-SYD "free" ticket.
FARE 0.00CAD
CA TAX 20.00 (Canada Security fee)
XG TAX 1.05 (GST)
SQ TAX 15.00 (YYZ AIF)
YQ TAX 76.00 (no idea what this is)
QK TAX 3.13 (Australia Noise Levy)
WY TAX 33.88 (Australia Passenger Service Charge)
AU TAX 34.93 (Australia Passenger Move Charge)
TOTAL PER TICKET 183.99CAD

Not all of them do, particularly the sites run by airlines.

QK TAX 3.13 (Australia Noise Levy)
Is this used to supply people close to the airport with earplugs or something?? I've never seen a "noise pollution" tax before! :D

I first thought (based on my first fast read) was this is a joke.
"Taxes includes the price" instead of "price includes taxes". ;)

I took a charter to Las Vegas earlier this year. The ticket was $93 return, but the taxes were $241. I saw some tickets for $67 return in last weekend's newspaper, but I'm sure the taxes are about the same.
