I had mine done at Blacks. It was a Black and White picture which apparently is the best way to go. It was around $20.

Prices vary a lot ... look around. I paid 15$ at Astral here in Montreal. But saw a few days later 8.99$ is some small mom & pop shop camera store.

Good luck.

Free---- (well cost of a tiny bit of paper and ink)

Do you have a digital camera?? Take it yourself and print it up. I called the passport office a while ago and it is a-ok, as long as you follow all the guidlines regarding size, smiling, etc..

When I was in their office today, the lady phoned an applicant that her photo had a problem. The lady said she told her husband about it might be problematic when he was here. It turned out it did have a problem although it was taken in a photo shop. And, the applicants needs to take yet another one and bring it in again.

Also, the photo of the gentleman in the next window also had problem because of brighest and background. And, the clerk was telling him what was wrong.

When I was in Costco, my daughters needed to take the photo 3 times because there was something not right and I had no freaking idea what went wrong because they all seems to be okay for me.

Exactly why taking it yourself may be a good alternative. Take 10 different ones, and bring them all in, if they dont like one say "well, how 'bout this one??" and just keep going til they find one they like. Still would cost you no more than maybe 1-2 sheets of full size photo paper.

I mean, I know that 10 bux is not that expensive, but the lengths I've seen people on this site go to save a loonie, well they would certainly do the pic themselves to save 10 loonies.

They seem to be much more picky on the photos. No smiles, no shadows, no glasses.

You may be able to get free passport pictures at Sears Travel
"All non-domestic travel requires proof of citizenship. Having an up-to-date passport is your best form of identification. Ask your travel consultant how you can get free passport pictures when you book with Sears Travel. "

Also, it may be part of Sears Passport to Travel, not sure

make sure when you're getting your photos taken, the photographer knows what he's doing. there are specific measurements for different types of passports/visas/immigration etc. the photographer should be knowledgeble about the diff backgrounds that also need to be used for the specific type of photo you're looking for...not all passport photos are the same...

anyone looking for a great place in mississauga that takes photos for a good price?

I did my passport photos originally at Walmart for $10, when I went to the passport office. They were no good. They give you proof why it isn't good so you can get a refund wherever you went. But I had to go and redo them.
I went to a place within Central Parkway Mall, which is where the passport office in Mississauga is located. I paid $15.

I went to a photo store in Square One and paid $18 so I can get a Work Visa.

Then I went to Pacific Mall and got 8 for $17. I wanted 20 for $22.99, but the guy said I'd have to come back the next day for them. Anyways, I used one at CAA to get a Intl. Driver's Permit with no problem. The other 7 are just in case I need it.

RCSS is cheap also around $6.99 (maybe $8.99 :?: ). That is Real Canadian Superstore that have the photo labs. I don't know if they all do. But the one by me does, Dundas and Trafalgar in Oakville.

Had to take a bunch of pics of the kids to 'get it right' no shadows etc.

If you did it by yourself, you won't get any stamp or something else to show when the photo taken, it may get trouble.

Black's is a ripoff but I got mine done there too.

They claim B&W is rejected much less often than colour. (Price for B&W vs. colour is equal.)

If your B&W photo is rejected by Passport Canada, they will re-take your photo for free. This guarantee does not apply for colour photos.

Blacks also gives you a "free" passport holder case.

I took mine at a professional studio at Missisauga (can't remember the name) for $12 and double ($24) for my little baby. It is a ripped off but most of the large retailer (Walmart, Costco, Loblaws, etc) don't do infant passport photo. That guys said they charge double because it is hard to post an infant. He still charged me $24 even my baby is very copoerative and it is done in 3 mins. Anyway, I took them to the passport office and it came out that mine is not ok, glare on my face. So I went downstairs to take another set in the govt bldg (at 4900 Yonge st). It cost $16 but it turns out fine and the officer is ok for taking both my signed but not ok photo and not sign but ok photo which I took downstairs.

Just be careful, there are thousands of reasons for them to reject your picture. The guy at the govt bldg told me to put some baby powder on (which they provided) so that won't have the glare.

costco is prolly the cheapest.

When i got my passport done, I paid around $20 for my photo. I needed the picture immediately and I was away at school at the time in Waterloo w/ no car, so I didn't really have the luxury of shopping around.

Anyway, the guy took my picture, uploaded it to his computer and started to whiten the background using the brush tool in paint. It was the ghettoest thing I've ever seen. I can't believe he charged me $20 for a photo I could have taken myself.

Both provide 2 colour photos and both are located in Pointe-Claire. Costco did mention that they only do Canadian passports.

I just got back from renewing my passport at the office near Scarborough Town Centre. I went to Walmart and paid $12.99 for 2 colour photos which were ready in 5 minutes.

After I renewed my passport, I left the building and noticed that there's a place on the lower level that does colour passport photos, 2 for $12.99 with a 3 minute wait. Had I known this before, I never would've bothered going to Walmart.

The address for the Passport Canada location is the following:

Passport Canada
Suite 210
200 Town Centre Court
Scarborough ON
Distance: 7 km
Mon-Fri: 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

Good to know this if you are in a hurry, and if they reject them you don't have far to go to replace them. I like Costco I have used them a few times, for visas as well, for $6 you can't beat them but for someone in a hurry this is perfect

And you ask your doctor (lawyer, accountants) to sign every single one of them. :)

You no longer need to have a any of the above sign the picture or be your guarantor...any card carrying visa holder can now vouch...I have certified lots of passport applications for people...My qualifications? Current passport holder. Example: In the case of parent, you can do it for your kids and no longer have to run around looking for a professional who has known you or the children for two years

I realize this quoted post is old, but it is still misleading and wrong.
Here is the official up to date (as of February 2009) information regarding passport photos:

*********
PHOTOGRAPHER AND GUARANTOR
Photos must be taken by a commercial photographer.
The name of the photographer or studio, the address and the date the photo was taken (not the date the photo was printed) must be provided directly on the back of one photo.
The guarantor must clearly write on the back of ONE (1) photo: "I certify this to be a true likeness of (applicant's name)".
*********

Incedentally, I got my passport photo taken at Costco for $5 - they were having a promotion.:D
