i dont know if any of you work in retail stores but damn i just dont understand why people stand in front of a store when they know it opens at a certain time. i dont get it. whats the point. and why do some people come right at close. i also dont get it. why dont u get off ur bar stool and leave that last beer for later. then u get all pissy and wonder WHY we wont let u in and serve you. and i have no idea why people bother calling before open also. in winnipeg we have LAWS that make EVERY STORE open at 12 pm. people come at 11 30 and call at 11 30 on sunday. if you live in winnipeg you know no stores open at 11 30. so why bother calling. i just dont get it. anyone here who does that please what your thinking. hours of operation are hours of operation.

1) Does the customer actually "know" when the store opens? You know, not everyone in Winnipeg at any given time lives there..
2) If you call before the store opens, you're more likely to get someone and not be put on hold for 10 minutes because the store is "too busy" (read: employee too f***ing lazy) to help you. Or if I live 30 mins. away from your store, save me the trip if you don't have what I want..
3) On closing time. Is your store one of the ones that tries to close the front doors a few minutes early? AFAIC, if the store closes at 7:00PM, and I get there at 6:59PM, then I expect to be able to get in and shop.. and I'd be pissed if I couldn't.

i get customers that come near closing time (9pm) and unfortunately we have to let them in b/c we are technically still open until the clock hits 9. what bugs me the most are the customers that come to pharmacy at 8:58pm asking me to fill their new prescription. I mean I shouldn't be grumpy about it because some people probably work late and don't have the time to drop by the pharmacy....but what about visiting the pharmacy that closes at midnight that's literally down the road?

heheh...there was actually one lady last saturday who tried to push herself through the doors. the store was obviously closed (lights were out, all of the employees in their jackets ready to leave) ...

Hear, hear. I know someone who works in retail. They have a postal outlet, and once a lady appeared as they were locking up. She begged them to let her in because she "just wanted to mail a letter", and then proceeded to spend the next ten minutes mailing out multiple letters and packages, and browsing the aisles. And she was upset when they told her they were closing.

Basically, people generally think they're more important than others. And people always wait until the last minute.

It's worse during Xmas. Everything shows up at Dec. 24th, and expect to be waited on hand and foot.

For those who think store clerks are just being whiny: think about this, the poor sap has been on their feet for 6+ hours, and they want to go home just like you to feed the kids or whatever. So it shouldn't surprise you that it's irritating to show up right before close or as they are closing, and then try to mail a parcel to Yemen or something.

AINT IT THE TRUTH!!!!!

I totally agree with this rant. Customers always come into the store i work at last minute. We have to serve them because they are still customers, but then they wonder why we give them poor service when they proceed to take forever to make a purchase decision. On saturdays i work 8am to 6pm (open to close) to make some hours since i am in school during the week. And it seems that every Saturday, some family comes in at 5:59pm wanting four pairs of skates sharpened or a new bike or a ping pong table that doesnt fit in the Honda Acura!!!! The funny thing about it all is that they actually complain afterwards that we didnt look to happy to help them!
It's like i always said, if u work in retail, ppl dont respect you just bc they think they are better than u. Thats why they dont care if we want to go home or not. They are all a bunch of...... hehehe.

For me, i only have 1,5 months left of university - then only 3 months left in retail until i start my corporate career!!! Then no more dark days of retail!

Well, personally, I have no sympathy, really. I worked:
- At Canada's Wonderland, where despite the park "closing" at 10:00PM, many, many people are still there (probably some who work in retail and would be "pissed off" if I walked into there store at closing time..). Usually didn't get to leave until 10:45 or so (and that wasn't the worst). Oh and considering some days you start at 9:30AM..

- Tech support, where some dumb **** waits until the last minute to request a laptop for the weekend, and they need to handholding all the way through.. after I was supposed to go home.

Well, actually, for the latter, it did piss me off.. because I was on salary and didn't get any extra $$ for working overtime.. but the point is, it's not just in retail jobs where you have people like this.

That's why I think they should list their closing hours half an hour before the employees are supposed to leave. If you want to close at 7, then list it at 6:30. Employees will be prepared to stay at 7 (if they get to leave early, it's an added bonus, I guess); and customers know they won't be let in AFTER 6:30. Win-win

I agree!!! When I worked in retail, it never failed to amaze me how many people would come in and try to get salon services and purchase product just prior to closing time. Some of them spent less time choosing a man than they did a lipstick shade, for Pete's sake! It's no wonder I'm a computer techie now. ;)

the thing is most of the time in retail you get there at 11 50 and have to cash in and count your drawer before you start. that takes 5 minutes. going to the door and yanking on it at 11 50 isnt going to get you in. even if you did get in no one can help you yet because the computer isnt even ready yet. the place i work has hours of operation on the door and on the big window. the messed up thing is people look right under the HUGE sign and still knock on the window. i dont get it. if someone comes in before doors lock, even at 5:59 thats fine. but when its 6 theyre locked and no one can be let in. at 6 o clock after customer are gone cashiers cash out and you cant ring anythign through.

Perhaps they left something in the store (purse, wallet, child, etc)?
