I don't know how many people are aware of not using cellphone at gas stations.
It is VERY dangerous! There are many explosive cases in other countries or in Canada.
All gas stations in Canada should make a big sign at the gas station.
Using a cellphone at gas station can blow up the whole gas station in few sec.

I agree you should not use cell phones while at a gas station, it can cause a explosion but its very unlikely. No need to talk like the media and senstationalize it. I dont think it has ever happened in Canada. Pretty sure it hasnt happened in the US either. If it ever did, you probably would see huge signs tell people now to use their cell.

An episode of Mythbusters (show on Discovery Channel where they test Urban Legends) aired before, and they discussed the idea of cellphones at Gas Stations and they proved the "apparent danger" of which to be minimal. The myth was busted, cell phones can't produce enough of spark to ignite the gasoline..
Quote from episode:
"Even after wearing down the antenna, finding out when the phone puts out the most amount of electro-magnetic energy and shorting out the battery, it just didn't work.
CELL PHONES DO NOT CAUSE GASOLINE EXPLOSIONS! "
As well read the following article with research on the topic :

But that was from a guy who was unsucessful. We probably would never have heard back from someone that was successful at creating a spark ;)

there are signs at gas here in toronto, people just don't heed their warnings.
that and they aren't that big.

To my knowledge, cars also require a spark to start the engine. Why is it that they do not blow up? These stories are fabricated to instill fear. Don't buy into them.

Whatever, smartypants.
Point being, there has never been a proven case of this happenning in the world, so it's a load of crock.

yup, saw that episode!
actually, there was a news report on this issue...
the highest probability of setting your car on fire at a gas station is when you take out the pump gun and placing your cap back on when the tank is at is max. full capacity!!!
Reason being, ruffling through your pockets for change creates static on sleeve/hand/braclet etc...and may ignite when the gas has just been removed, leaving a trail of drips by the top of the tank opening!
ps. this is more likely to happen to women, according to the report!

Wasn't there something on the news recently, how a cell phone battery exploded in a ladies house and made a fire? I'm not sure if it was in the US or Canada. Anyways, i guess if you have a non-OEM battery or i'm not sure if it can be OEM, but yea, if you're that unlucky, dun dun dun.

a lot of gas stations have those signs (stickers actually) right next to the no smoking sign. Just not as noticable and it doesn't pose as much of a threat as smoking a cigarette

Yes this is supposed to be an urban legend. Far worse for you is getting in and out of your car during filling or leaving your vehicle running while it is being filled. I don't think they are allowed to turn on the pump in Ontario if you are running your vehicle.

also getting back in to the car, then going out to remove the hose can cause an static spark. Seen a video about this. Not sure if it was true though. Any comments?

This is true (a few people have mentioned seeing a news thing about this - I vaguely remember it as well). I don't know about everywhere in Canada, but I know in Alberta and Sask, they don't have those nifty little things on the pump so that you can turn the pump on and leave it running, you have to stand there and pump it yourself. Stupid people getting into and out of their car while pumping gas...grumble grumble

Although mythbusters did bust the RINGING cell phone myth, they did not go far enough, they should have also used the phone in vibration mode because they have a small motor rotating and where there are metal things rotating there is the potential for a spark, the only problem even with this is most cell phones are pretty well made, and the motor is well sealed so it would be difficult for any gas fumes to get in there anyway, but still the myth isn't COMPLETLY BUSTED. BTW, mythbusters rule! :cheesygri

I miss my old buick, was able to stick the gas cap under the trigger and go back in to the car to warm up, or do the windows or check the oil.

Just recently my friend informed me of someone answering their cell while he was filling up.
Another danger is static electricity which lots of people are not aware off in winter and most people luckily and unpurposely are grounded before filling up.

it may cause a spark which can ignite it and cause an explosion at older stations, that's why the gov't forced all the big companies to bring those old stations up to code, that's why u see most gas stations are very new now.
they may not cause a fire at the newer station since they are better protected, but why risk it anyways? im sure everyone can stand not talking on the phone for 5 minutes just for everyone feeling safe.
also it is not only talking on the phone but the ringing on the cell phone can cause it too, therefore it's suggested that you turn off your cell phone before even entering the cell phone.
last week i saw some lady talking on the phone while pumping gas into her car and she didn't even turn off her car, i so wanted to yell at her but i was half way out the station anyways.

yeah i agree cell phones arent dangerous enough to blow up a gas station
unless its the old kyocera battery that explodes
lol
i luv mythbuster too
except dont like seeing the skull getting chopped by an industrial ceiling fan...
and i feel bad for buster getting blown up and f'ed up anyway they can

you didnt read a single post in this thread did you?
the fact is these two people on this show called myth busters basically tried to cause an explosion by taking an older model cellphone which puts out a lot of EM waves and stuck it in a booth which was saturated with gas vapours and did everything they possibly could to make it explode. in short they failed and couldnt cause an explosion.
the only reason you have the warnings up is because some crappy fake batteries explode once in a while and it gets blown out of proportion (pardon the pun) by the news media. when you consider the number of cell phones in use and the number of reported incidents i dont think an exploding cellphone with a fake faulty battery is going to take a gas station out anytime soon or ever as a matter of fact.
you do make a vaild point about keeping your car running, it could be considered a problem but then again i'm not sure. I remember talking to a trucker once and he mentioned how when it gets really cold in northern alberta they never switch off their engines. then again those are diesel trucks and not gas powered cars, so i'm not sure if it applies.

It's not the drops of fuel that ignite. It's the fumes coming out of the opening to the gas tank that can ignite. Gasoline by itself is too rich to burn, but when it's in the form of fumes, it's mixes with air and is very easy to ignite. You can actually dowse a fire with liquid gasoline.

That is what mythbusters suggested. They also said women are several times more likely to go back in the car, which is why they are usually the ones that are involved in the freak explosions.
