Hmmm you're right. I was gonna say a A4 TDI wagon but i don't think that exists either.

Dun worry... VW said they're gonna be bringing more engines to North America over the next few years.

91 Protege -- made it to 270000kms

Looking to replace the 626. Mazda parts prices are insanely high..For ex..for replacement brake and fuel lines (total of 5), Mazda's latest price increase brought the parts costs to almost $1000. What a joke. They should be $50 each. My mechanic made a brake line instead.

to both Passat owners - how are the pasats for reliability?

We're thinking of a new car, and my wife wants a passat wagon - she has a Jetta now - and I'm not too impressed with VW to tell you the truth.

I told her I'd consider the Passat if it has a good track record - We'd probably be looking at something in the 01-03 range...

At 96,000km I changed timing belt and accessories, then about 2-3000 km later I changed the water pump. At 125,000km I had to change some small tubes for $120 and nothing else except wear and tear items: twice brake pads and rotors all around (even though we are not sporty drivers, just crappy materials) and twice tires, latest at 125,000. Oh yeah, I replaced the battery also, at like 120,000. A lot of things done lately, but I hope that's about it for a while.
Other than this, it is a joy to drive, still. I plan on keeping it for another 4 years. Resale value is a b*tch. Only $6000 after 6 years, when I payed $33.500 for it
I read that the 2001 models and after had a lot of complaints, which is why I would avoid those.

I've got about 39,000km on it so for, and have had the waterpump replaced under warranty, battery replaced (i think thats because the car was sitting idle for a long periods of time, and i had a really short trip to work, so didnt let it warm up properly). Had a rear window regulator repalced but i think thats because of the tint shop. Nothing major so far, although it has very low km.

Replaced the diverter valve myself due to the fact that i'm running higher psi from the turbo. If you want more info on B5 passats, check out www.clubb5.com , the forums are a great resource.

I'm going to the car show and look at the new audi A4 B7 platform, really like the new grille.

Wow, after hearing all these problems I may rethink about buying VW if my car ever dies. Ive never had a problem with mine what so over, besides minor mainteannce here and there. Biggest thing so far in 12 years was replacing the power steering rack because a seal went.

Other than that it has never let me down. Maybe the new ones arent made as good as the old ones

family cars are leased (buick and ford) or inheritance (dodge shadow, well she never wrote a will and the government doesn't know she's dead but they stopped sending her pension cheques the month after death and asked for a death certificate [$40 for proof of death, no thank you] which we never sent and they never cared)

my thoughts exactly. you'd think of all the cheap bastards on this board that there must be tons of suckers who think corolla are great cars.

actually check that. corollas ARE great cars. it's just people who drive corollas that suck at driving.

case in point... pay attention to who cuts you off next time you're going 120km/h to 140km/h in the fast lane on the 401. It'll be a corolla doing less than 120km/h... more like 100km/h or even 80km/h on a good day.

In my experience and most of my friends' experiences it's either a Civic or a minivan that do the super dangerous lack of common sense moves. (ie. left turn from a right lane cutting across 4 lanes of traffic sideways at +50kph deltas, zipping into blind pockets, etc.),

I'd expect SUV drivers to be up there but they do it to annoy as opposed to being oblivious... not sure which is worse.

You're absolutely right! There's a difference in what we're advocating here though.

Your Civic / minivan drivers KNOW they're doing something stupid... but they think they can get away with it because their r1c3d out Civic is hawwtt. The minivans think they're still hot shits cuz they traded in their ricerocket for the minivan when they got the girl pregnant. In either case, at least they know what they're doing.

The Corollas? They don't know what hit them. When you pass them aggressively and cut them back off, they have no idea why you're doing it.

i'd agree with you on the corolla thing--i've noticed that phenomenon as well. however, i think if you ask a bunch of different people, you'll get a bunch of different opinions.

i find buick drivers to be really, really bad. they're usually driven by really old people who want a really big car for the least amount of money. they can usually be seen lane changing without signalling, straddling the line between two lanes, and braking as they drive through an intersection on a green light. not to mention, merging unsafely into oncoming traffic from a side street, and generally driving 10km below the posted limit.

LOL.

I'd have to say VW drivers are the most annoying, mostly cuz they are ridiculously aggressive but very UNSKILLED drivers.

In contrast, Nissan Maxima drivers know what they're doing, casual and coast but can pass anyone they want and scare the crap outta the pseudo-racers of the Civic nation.

my dad has a 2003 (i think) BMW 540i, with some sort of modification, i have no idea what, but it goes, its the nice green color
my mom drives a 2005 mazda six wagon (metallic grey color, really nice car for less than 40k)
we also have cars my dad leased for his buiness that we rarely use, a 2003 for expedition all black (it looks liek the ones in 24 sortof, its kinda cool)
and a 2004 ford crown victoria..... (was planned to pick up high roller client etc.. got a really good lease on it, but it was cheaper to just hire limos or something, so its sitting in the parkade of office)

my mom also used to have an Yukon XL denali, but she hated, and i mean HATED driving/parking that thing, when the only reason she had it was to be able to put kids/hockey bags in it, something that the six does considerably well.

I have:

1994 Ford Probe SE: 280,000km's
1989 Ford Probe GL: 110,000km's (parked)

No MAJOR problems yet, the GL went through 3 alts within a period of a couple months, but thats what I get for going with rebuilds :\

The '94's interior is faling apart and it's red with a black front bumper. Anyway, still get nice comments about it as long as they don't sit in it during the day and I live in a poor town so that helps too.

Yes to your question. I can turn on one then set the other to fire and theft. Its just a calculation of insurance premiums on the difference of both cars. Sometimes I get credit, other times I pay alittle more the following month.

You cannot insure the motorcycle seasonal anymore though, well atleast through primmum...

actually check that. corollas ARE great cars. it's just people who drive corollas that suck at driving.

case in point... pay attention to who cuts you off next time you're going 120km/h to 140km/h in the fast lane on the 401. It'll be a corolla doing less than 120km/h... more like 100km/h or even 80km/h on a good day.

Um... yes and no.. The carollas to look out for are the champain coloured carollas with the big rear view mirrors. Those drivers are totally lost. I got nothing against the sporty faster carollas - type S I think. And I usually don't get cut off by carollas, I usually get stuck behind them doing 40 in a 60 zone in the left lane.

Do people get a bigger rearview mirror or something? Never really paid attention to this myself.

As for the thing about sports models, I completely disagree (based on 05 rollas). Im against them personally, if you have the money to spend sure, but the S model is ALL cosmetics. Performance-wise, it is the EXACT same as the CE and LE. The only sports model I would agree with you on is the XRS.

Wow.. didn't realize the type S still had the lower model engine.. 130HP vs the XRS's 170HP. As for the big rear view mirros.. keep an eye out for them. Next time you get stuck behind a really bad driver, look at their rear view mirror. Chances are it will be one of those after-market giant rectangle mirrors.

Yup, the S is just a spoiler and some other things to make it "look" faster. The XRS on the other hand, someone has done 0-60 in 7.1sec in it, which is definitely a lot better than the regular.

im in awe as well.....

when purchasing winter tires, make sure you see the little snow flake * on the rubber.
this means theyve been approved by the big guys that their performance is made for winter weather. the difference with a snow flake on a tire is that it has a 10% stopping difference. so just imagine, you can prevent 1 in 10 accidents when riding on the snow!

thats amazing

I drove my parents' 99 Escort Wagon for like 10 months initially to earn the money required to upgrade :cheesygri . They bought the Ford specifically for me to learn driving with and that thing could sure corner better than the Lexus. Love the ride of the Lexus to be honest though. Much quieter and more relaxed. I just installed an HKS 3" cat-back exhaust on my 04 WRX, and man...I'm speechless...such a difference!

It added around/a bit over 25 horsepower, and allows the turbo to spool about 700/800rpm sooner!! So the car's turbo spools up at around 2700rpm instead of the stock 3500rpm (in other words, the crazy boost of power starts sooner rather than later). Man...and it sounds fantastic.

So, Im now officially at 250-252 hp. Next on the list is an Accessport, which should bring the car to around 275-280hp.

I'll post some pics when I take some next.

that's an amazing record I couldn't keep it for more than 10 secords @ 200 clics it's scary to see how fast 'the world's coming' against you
...or see how fast you'd get a ticket.dumb.

...or see how fast you'd get a ticket.dumb.

Well. yes. We were driving from Ontario to Nova Scotia. I was totally bored and thought for entertainment I would see what 7.5 litres of engine would do if I just put my foot to the floor and 'left it there'. The speedo pinned out just past 200 km/h so I don't know how fast I really went but it would not have been much more than that. After an hour though even that was still boring but my nerves were starting to hammer at me as I thought about tire blowouts or police.

It was 2am, so I couldn't see much of the world around me or how fast it was coming. I could have easily gotten a ticket that would have cost me a ton of money or even my license.

Worse someone might have been killed. Kids don't try this yourselves.

Other dumb things not to try in your 1972 Lincoln Mark IV. See if wheels will spin on black ice if you are already going 120. Push it hard enough and see if will stay in 2nd gear to 150 km/h. Blow a left turn in winter and see if you can switch to reverse fast enough to avoid oncoming traffic when you find you are in the wrong lane. See how much 'air' you can get going over a raised railway crossing. At a 4-way stop: launch, donut and wind up in the proper lane and properly placed at the stop sign to your left.

I have 'banned' myself from driving motorcycles or snowmobiles for obvious reasons.

Wow I am starting to really miss this car. Well not the gas bills, and not the repair bills either. But oooh man that 8 feet of hood stretching out in front me.........

Why not? My wife does alot of city driving, that takes a lot of fuel and maintanance. And she's one of the world's worst parkers (she's had two collisions with walls in her van). This fits the bill nicely and according to her, "its cute".

i would get an echo hatchback.... looks as nice as Smart plus i dont think Smart has any space at all for groceries or any other stuff except 2 ppl.

if your wife is soo bad in parking i would instal parking distance control for her, costs around $100 plus $50 for instalation or so. :)

i would consider something like that only if i lived in Europe.

But yes, the Echo was a second choice, and I might get one after I dump the mini-van in a couple years. When I heard that the Smart car was potentially being dropped by MB, I suggested she go with the Echo. She choice the Smart anyway.

Haven't seen another coupe on the road in Toronto yet.

From Canadiandriver.com
I had an opportunity to drive the Cobalt LS and LT models and a Pursuit SE for about five hours in a variety of weather conditions ranging from sunny and dry to a continuous downpour. My first impressions are positive. The Cobalt's driving dynamics, powertrain, interior quality, and interior noise levels, are equal to or better than cars like the Civic and Corolla - and light years ahead of the Cavalier/Sunfire
The Cobalt is a big, big step up from the Cavalier, and it's superior to its competitors in many respects. In my opinion, its level of interior fit and finish and materials quality is superior to the Ford Focus and Dodge 2.0SX, and I think its performance is superior to the Civic and Corolla. And the Cobalt comes with a competitive 5 year/100,000 km powertrain warranty.

Although I would NEVER look at the Cav/sunfire, the new versions look pretty good and are getting good reviews everywhere.

and the value models will fly off the shelves!

The small car segment in Canada is huge, GM needed to hit a home run, and until the new CIvic and Corolla come out it appear they've done a good job.

Mind you the G6 isn't doing very well!!!! although I do like the looks.

I've had punks come up to me and signal a drag, and I know my car can probably beat some of them , but that doesn't mean I would. Im gonna have to agree with 'me!' on this one. Late at night/morning is the worse time to be racing someone on there. First, your visibility is really low, and they tend to have a lot of cops around at that time. Have seen them and potentially could have been caught by them so many times already.

Along that route, several times, I just had a gut feeling to slow down, a minute later, cop zooms by. One time, the cop pulled over the guy in front of me, and another time, it was the guy right behind me.

Not that you should, but a good place to race though is out in the rural areas. The roads almost never have any cars, and you get really long stretches of road. It can be straight and flat, or curvy and hilly depending where you go. Was the only time I really got to push my car, it was kinda disappointing, but was to be expected.

Although it was a fun race, I don't think I would do it again. You never know if a cop was hiding somewhere waiting to whoop your @ss. Anyways, I rarely ever race anymore, unless some "cheap looking gangster wannabe car" start cutting out and in on me.

Second was a ...........1992 Eagle Vista (same car as above) - bought used.
Third car was a leased 2001 Hyundai Accent.

Fully loaded. About the only options missing are leather seats and a sunroof. Has the 3.4L V6, which provides a lot more power than my previous car (http://www.thetechzone.com/photo/computers.php?photo=9919&size=big&password=&sort=1&cat=503). Hehehe, actually not 12 hours after rolling this car of the lot, I already had a photo radar ticket for doing 102KM/h on the Whitemud (80KM/h zone). I've already pinned the governor, which on this car is an unfortunate 170KM/h. Once I have some money I plan on rectifying that little problem.

I really don't understand why people dump on these cars so much. Mine has been quite reliable. Other that the standard maintenance, I haven't had a problem.

Got rear ended today in the greasy weather. Pontiac behind had bad tires and/or slow reaction... it walked away with bumper damage and a bent hood after causing all that :arrowu: carnage to the brick.

Heh. And all this after I spent a good part of last night waxing the thing too.

This is what I'm driving, and I resent the fact that you put Hyundai and KIA as the same option on the poll! :D

I think it's because they are the same company?

They are not the same company. However, Hyundai does now own Kia.

Although, what I'm wondering is how 8% of people voted they have a Porsche or similar.

That's because it doesn't say "Porsche or similar"; it says "Porsche or other". So anyone having anything not as one of the choices is forced to vote in the Porsche category, LOL.

So even the person that had the mountain bike would vote under Porsche, LOL. Same goes for the guy with the Kawasaki.

"Porsche or other" as a choice is even worse than "Hyundai/Kia"...

VW Rabbit 2007 as of September 29th, 2006.

I owned a few Hondas in the past (new: Civic '97 and Accord 2002). I was shopping and stopped at my friendly VW dealer last week and fell in love with the Rabbit. Had to have it and got it!

Although I have 269 months experience on the road (you do the calcs and figure out how old I am, haha) with only one car accident back in the late 80's, the cheapest car insurance premium I found was $1200/yr.

the car's been recalled 4 times (maybe 3 times) in less than 2 yrs. most of 2002 se-rs have hard start problem in cold weather (mine too). took the car to the dealer to have it (hard start problem) fixed 5 times over the past 2 yrs but they couldn't even figure out the cause. and this car runs approx. 390km ~ 430km with full tank of gas (50L) even tho it's only 4 cylinder!!!

Now is that 390km when the indicator fuel light goes on because it might be ~5
L left in the tank.

In the case of the corolla, the indicator fuel light comes on when there is 10L left.
