How is everyone's education here? I'm just curious as to everyone's education on this board, and where you're at currently.
Do you have a Bachelor? Masters? Post Doc? Diploma? Still in high school?
And if possible, tell us what your specialization is.
I'll start by saying I will be getting a BSc with a Biomedical Science Major and a Minor in Bio. My goal is to become an O.D. in a few years.
What about all you other students, and old folks?

I have a year left in my BBA, and after that I'm going to go on for a Law Degree. With my law degree I would like to either go into International Law, or Corporate law. I might end up doing both, do the corp. to make some money for awhile, then go on and do International to feel like I'm doing something worthwhile, and might finish my working career as a professor, before doing that though I might try to get a doctored.

Finished high school, got turfed out of U of T after 2 years
Been working for the same company now for 10 1/2 years, starting low and now in middle management. Consider myself pretty fortunate to have what I would consider almost my dream job. Even been through a lock-out with this company. Kinda weird when I went to high school, to finish classes then head over to the picket lines and join your co-workers. ;)

Its up to your own drive and will to get a good job...
My oldest bro has a simple 3yr college diploma in accounting. Its a good lil piece of credential altho not the best, but in go out of college working 20bucks an hour and now he's a Sales Manager at a electronic part distribution Company.
Its the same principal with arts and humanities type educations... they dont teach you anything, rather they are there to stimulate creative and critical thoughts.
Like one of the guys above, he didnt learn anything about business until AFTER university despite having a specialized degree in business.
For things like Business alot of employers hire peoplpe that can think, be good writers, and have precise critical analysis skills. This is exactly what im doing ;) plusi got a triple threat with a professionally related minor.

They advertised this a lot when I was in high school (Brother Andre in Markham). No idea why, I thought it was a waste of time since most of us ended up going to university anyway. We should have been learning stuff instead of wasting time with these in class presentations.

College diploma -Chem Eng Technology. Working for a huge consumer goods company. Started as an R&D tech but changes to tax laws made R&D in Canada obsolete...job went to the states but I wasn't interested in that. I am still with the same company after surviving a few downsizings. Key to keeping employed was to maintain interest and curiosity to do work outside my 'zone'. I haven't done chemistry in years but enjoy what I do now.
Could have gone to University but figured I'd graduate top of my class in College and get to pick who I wanted to work for. That worked great but I didn't realize that it would lead to a glass ceiling that took like 5 years to crack once I figured out it was there. It's all good now.

Got what he has, and another diploma for digital production. Been out for 5 months now, without fulltime work (though I spent 3 of those months not looking; never took a vacation/semester off throughout both diplomas, needed the break).
Aside from some contract work which doesn't pay well, nothing's happening. Still looking for a job, though I'm pretty picky; I'm not working at a Kinko's or McD's after all that education. Don't need the money, won't accept a job I find undesirable.
Starting my own venture soon, piecing together specs right now...see how that goes.

Yes to a point it's who you know. however it's not nearly as drastic as that.
You still need to have the skills for the job. No one is going to givea freind a job when they know they are not cabable of the job. It looks bad on you when they get canned a week in for not knowing a thing.

Another note in regards to the importance of a degree.
An university degree is less valuable than say 20 years ago b/c back then not a lot of ppl have degrees.
Right now, everyone have some type of letters behind their name (some have so much letters that it looks like a sentence after their name :D). If u look at demand and supply, with so much supply of degrees everywhere, the degree itself become less important factor for those who are hiring.

Look at it from a different perspective: a degree may be an asset back then; now it's a requirement. It can be used as a screening tool.

the proper way to look at is a degree nowadays is the minimum requirement for most jobs. it's basically a licence to work, without it, you are not eligible for many positions out there nowadays, because like you say, there's such a huge supply of degrees, why wouldnt you get somebody with one?

bit of advice: regardless of what the school tells you, they rank the different engineering programs. If you are torn between a few, pick the "hardest" one. that way, if you don't like it, you can transfer down easily. Going the other way is harder.

(They don't just give out BA's and MA's...gotta use the Latin order of the letters, the snobs.) It took six years to convince me I didn't want to be a statistician so I did an MBA and joined a CA firm. Now an overeducated accountant but at least I'm employed.
I'm curious because my friend thought about going about this route: How did you get your CA/CGA/CMA/etc. through your MBA? Are there other courses/things you had to do since it is not like MMPA or accounting undergraduate programs?

I've got a computer engineering degree from Waterloo and I'm now a homeless heroin addict. I steal to support my habits and have been in jail a few times. It's been a good life so far.

I did a CA. You're right, when I did the MBA part time you couldn't get all the credits at U of T so I did them at Atkinson...particularly the Advanced Accounting and Audit courses. I got several exemptions from the MBA through my previous degrees, some of which counted toward the CA as well. I then started sending out resumes and got on with a major firm. If I were an undergrad now and wanted any of the designations I would get my bachelors degree...making sure I was taking all the required courses as part of it..and would try to get a job from there. You can always pick up the MBA later. I did the MBA because I got several exemptions, I could do it part time and as I already had the Master of Arts in Statistics I could'nt see myself going back to being an undergrad. LOL.
Incidentally, if you have a non business degree you can knock off all the CA credits and get a B.Comm from Windsor in something like 11 months. There was a guy I articled with who had done that and was quite happy with that choice. Good luck.:D

Where are you planning on doing your Masters after? What benefits does having a Masters in OT or PT have? My sister is currently in Kin. at York so I'm curious.

Benefits of OT include -
1) Good prospect of a Job - actually a job is pretty much guaranteed - many of us (my classmates at U of T OT got jobs before graduating and anybody who wanted to work after graduating got a job.
2) Good pay - It is possible to make 6 figures in your first year if you work hard. It is common for many grads to make 60k plus in their first year with benefits.
3) You are a licensed professional, so you are basically accountable to your clients/patients. You really do not have a boss who tells you what to do - you have alot of autonomy.
4) You help people in need. You feel good at what you are doing is helping people regain, recover, or help them do things they need to or want to do to move on with their lives after injury, medical issues, etc.. What you do helps people, unlike the corporate world where your work helps the company/owners/shareholders make more money.

How so? Not enjoying it?
I find the BBA program to be pretty terrible in terms of what it offers in relation to the cost. Nothing of value :(

Yup your absolutely correct. All that money gone is just to get the UofT name. I have also come to a conclusion that the utsc accounting faculty is particular hard, so at the same time, is lowering my chances for CA and grad school.
