Who checks their fire and carbon monoxide detector regularly? Like say, once a month?

Does anyone know how to check it properly? I have one thats been plugged in for about a year. I don't know if it's dust clogged or what. My fire alarm goes off sometimes when i'm cooking, so that's good because i know it works.

I'm checking out canadiantire.ca and I see a lot that are $40 and some $10. Whats the big difference? As long as it can detect smoke/CO that should be good enough, right?

I also noticed theres Photo/Ion and photoelectric type of smoke alarms. Whats the difference?

Well for smoke detector, just bring a candle close to it, and watch it ring. I go around my house carrying the candle testing out my smoke detectors.

I haven't found a way to test the CO ones yet.

Every six months I check mine. I replace the battery even if it is still okay.
