I need advice/input from all you electronic gurus.. I have a small dilemma regarding digital cameras in that I am buying one for my girlfriend before she leaves on a trip next weekend. Since she's using a film camera from the 1930's ATM, I'm looking to get her a starter camera for a reasonable amount. Deciding between:

1) Kodak 7220 2.0MP $139.99 @ FS
2) Canon A60 2.0PM $169.99 @ FS Web only
3) Olympus D-535 3.2PM $125 @ Canadacomputers (If I can miraculously find one in stock by the weekend)

Definitely need optical zoom, the Kodak is very cheap, but the canon is at a great price now. The Olympus is a very Hot Deal but I've been searching for the past week and all out of stock. hrmmmmmm.. what do i do?? :(

No Kodak for sure, Olympus, maybe
I say Canon

Brand is enough to decide :)

Though A60 may be a bit bulky (all the Axx series are IMO)

I'll 3rd the a60 - though, I'd probably recommend bucking up to a 3 mp unit like the a70? I agree that the axx cameras are a bit builky and heavy, but the pic quality is good, the manual features are a plus and the AA batteries make life simple

thnx guys.. again it's for my girlfriend and bulkiness/heaviness may be a bigger factor than need be for girls. 3MP will be better but its a beginner camera and not worth investing another $100+.. I'm a financially-struggling student if that doesn't say enough.. ;) hrmmm...

If her camera is from the 30's, it's might be worth something to collectors. Why not sell that and then get her one of the "S" series of cameras from Canon. They're pretty small and are very good.

if its for your girlfriend, then wouldnt she have a purse? anyway, if bulkiness/heaviness is REALLY a problem... then you might wanna check the olympus. i still recommend the a60 though (i have one myself :])
DEFINITELY, no kodak.

i didn't hear good things about the Olympus, i was going to get it for fun, but ppl are saying that the exterior are a piece of crap, looks like its going to break easily; picture quality suck, especially when you're taking indoor. Well, these two things turned me down after.....don't waste your money on it.....

Well she'll obviously have a purse but I'm pretty sure she wouldn't want it looking like there's a brick sticking outta it.. She'll also be using for clubbing, parties, etc. so bulkiness may be a cause for concern for her. Is it seriously that much bulkier than the others?? I haven't had the chance to check it out in person.

Haha.. it was an exaggeration..

Having a 2MP camera isn't going to last you for very long. Right now, it's best to get at least a 3MP or 4MP. Pentax Optio30 is $220 af FS so only $50 more than A60

A 2MP camera is sufficent for taking 4x6 photographs. Since she's using a film camera from the 1930s, I think any camera including the Kodak will create an image superior to that. Truth is, when was the last time you developed a photo larger than 4x6? [I did 3 5x7 and 3 8x10s bout 4 months back but thats cause they were on sale for 50c and $1 each respectively and it was the first time I got my photos developed].

But yeah, definatly go with the Canon if you think bulkyness is not too big an issue (I would imagine her 1930 Camera to be quite old big anyways). Do not go for the Kodak cam, I've been quite dissapointed at the LCD and the image reproduction.

Hey peeps! Nice thread :)

I am in the market for a new cam too - first time buyer so I know nothing about Cams.

How safe is it to buy a 2nd hand cam without a valid warranty? meaning no receipt, cause I know if something goes wrong you need the receipt to send in right? This guy is selling a 1 month old Canon A85 for $290. Also I would need batteries and charger.

What do you think? Should I get 4.0 or 3.2 MP cam? I am a student too, and just looking for fun, might use for in job and school later on. I was told to get 4.0 min if I want to do large prints.

Thanks :)

i too recommend the canon. if the A series is too big, try looking at costco.. they have S?? 3.2mp for 189.00, that is still in the price range of the A60.

i have the A70, but lately i've been looking at the S series at costco, i really like them. price is decent too.

Very true! My brother came back from a trip to Cuba last week and brought along his old Canon S200 Elph 2MP. The pix turned out pretty darn good so 2MP is good enough for me, as well as her!! The thing is that the A60 is web-only and I might not be home for delivery; I better be able to pickup after the first missed attempt or it's no point. Gotta decide soon, eeeek!

*Thnx for the input guys! Plus the A60 takes 4 "AA"'s yikes!

4AA for me, for my A70 means a lot of pictures shot, for about 7 - 14 days before I have to recharge again. I am very happy with the battery life. I use NiMH rechargeables, and always have another set ready to go.

The size is fine; unless she is used to a super compact camera, which she obviously isn't, as she used to use a very old camera, I too can fit the A70 into my purse.

I would definitely go with the Canon. :)

so its not worth the extra $ for a 4.0 vs 3.2 for me?

$290 for a A85 4.0 MP..............yay or nay?

Jory - How much heavier is it w/ the 4 batteries inserted?? Is it still comfortable to use and carry around?

PBure - For me, anything over 3MP isn't worth it if you are an amateur and occasional photographer needing only 5x7"'s (unless the prices are ridiculously low that is). But, if you're into taking portrait 8x10's, then I'd say go for the 4.0MP

Of the three, I'd choose the A60... it offers the best bang for your buck, imo.

One thing to watch out for, though... the opitcal unit (read: lens) is pretty prone to breakage (of the non-visible kind). Some cameras develop an E-18 error which will require service from Canon, usually 4-6 weeks. In my experience, 2 out of about 12 A60's we've used at work have failed this way.

Other than that, the picture quality is really good, though I'm not too fond of the autofocus times.

thanks.. good points to raise!!

Still not too fond of the weight of 4 bat's + the protrusion from the right-hand/holding side..

well the thing is, I can get a 4MP A85 for cheaper than a 3.2 canon lol.

How are Nikon coolpix?

I would go for Canon also, have an A70, S500. I am very wtih both. I also had a nikon and kodak in teh past, i returned the kodak within a week, it was a 1.3mp, but i woudl stay away from kodak.

The 4 AA batteries for the A series does make it heavier, esp if u have high mAmp batteries.. But it'll last u along time, better than other Lit Ion batteries and smaller cameras.

Canon all the way!
