Update:
Xbox 2 in Fall
Terren Tong - Monday, February 14th, 2005 | 11:07AM (PST)
More exact timeframe cited
GamesIndustry.biz is reporting that Xbox 2 is being readied for this fall and has a more definite window than just 4Q or fall -
While internet news sources today have reported that Microsoft is readying to launch its next generation Xbox hardware in America and Europe in the fourth quarter of this year, Eurogamer has learnt that the specific timing for the machine's roll-out is late October or early November, and merely weeks after the US launch. The exact date is yet to be solidified.
It sounds like the European launch will be October/November while the North American launch may be September/October if the report is correct. Should be very interesting to see what MS and ATI have in store - R520 class hardware will be close to top of the line PC hardware and the PowerPC processor should be a pretty strong pairing as well.

A LEAKED press release from industry Dahlings and would-be world-dominators Electronic Arts has let slip that Xbox 2 will be hitting late this year, just in time for the next versions of Burnout and Need For Speed.
According to a filing at SPOnG, the next version of Need For Speed - subtitled Most Wanted - will be making its way onto Xbox, PS2, GameCube, PC, PSP, Nintendo DS and willl have a "...simultaneous ship with the Xbox2 platform."
The time frame certainly makes sense - we're all expecting Gates' next wonderbox before the end of this year, and the massive Q4 success of Burnout 3 would put it on track for a sequel same time, same place.
We called EA for a comment, but every single one of their myriad of press officers was out of the office or away from their desk. Crisis management?
In other Xbox news, Xbit has an interview with Nvidia, in which the green machine gives away some of the details of its deal with Sony for the PS3. While Nvidia told us a while back that making the Xbox 2 chip was a mugs game, since Microsoft wanted to license the chip technology and there was no money in licensing, it turns out that Sony are licensing the PS3 chip from Nvidia. Mugs?

Spong has no credit at all, but xbox 2 will come out this year, but 99 % of what is posted on spongs site is bs.

None of the above is true.
Microsoft has confirmed, though, that the next XBox will be based on the (Apple) G5 technology. So in effect the XBox will be a souped up/stripped down--depending on how you look at it--Mac. This is actually very old news.

Well if you read carefully enough you would see that the Inq is quoting EA as the source:

Spong is only quoted when talking about the next NFS.

Do you have any proof that the Inq is lying about the leaked EA press release? Sources? The article is about the release date for the "xbox 2", not the technology behind it. At the bottom of the article it mentions that NVidia is providing the chips for the "PS3". Not true? Xbit didn't have an interview with NVidia? What's this (http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/editorial/display/ces2005.html) then?

$0ny and nvidia had a press release didn't they about 3 months ago?
Everyone seems to know Xbox 2 is launching sometime this year (Lord knows how they are gonna get the games out looking lightyears beyond what is out now in time) so this isn't new. MS has been saying they'll pre-empt Sony by about a year. You can bet Sony will have some absolutely fantastic game demos for E3 this year though (I really don't see how Nintendo can survive the next gen w/o doing a Sega and throwing in the towel and just becoming a publisher as they have ZERO hype on the "Revolution").

I can't help but wonder how long we'll have to wait after the Xbox 2's launch before there's a decent modchip for it. I imagine a few months at the very least, so the useful lifespan for the current Xbox should extend that long, if not longer. So personally, I wouldn't bother with second thoughts about having bought a modded Xbox recently.

Even when I have an Xbox 2, my modded Xbox is staying right where it is...as the most treasured posession in my home theatre setup :D.
Only when there is an XBMC on the Xbox 2 will I move the Xbox 1 to a bedroom.
Imagine watching WMV HD on Xbox 2

Just like this generation, the answer is both! (if you can sqeeze the cash)
I'm leaning more to xbox 2, simply because xbox live is a superior online platform.
Well that and I'm still bitter at sony for releasing crappy hardware for the PS2.

Haha, that last pic is great.
I'm leaning to PS3 this gen. I got all 3 consoles this round plus the DS, GBA (and soon the PSP) and just way too much games (yes much, not many :))
I'm gonna stick to one and just borrow a friend's when I wanna play the exclusives. I'm leaning to PS3 but I'll wait till 2006 before I jump. Hopefully by then I can catch up on all the AAA titles that's on my list to pass.

Actually the X-Box is running on IBM's PowerPC CPU (the 770 I think), which is what they have in common with Macs but I don't think I'd relate the next X-Box to a Mac.
Any way, am I the only one curious to know what will happen to X-Box Live? Will your current account apply and be transfered to the new console? Will it cost the same, will it even be available at launch? If the next X-Box can play current X-Box games, will Live owrk for them as well?

This will probably be the first time a console is being replaced before it hit it's prime. Look at any other system in the past and what the quality of the titles were like the first few years. Then look at what developers were able to squeeze out of the system near the end of it's life. We won't see that with the XBOX because attention will now be on the new hardware. I would guess you will still see new titles for a while but don't expect that to last too long.

I think the Xbox has passed it's prime. 2004 was the year with a bunch of great titles.

lol, I love rumours.
This is what i know, FROM work
Xbox will house 3 procs. 2 for the main pipelines and 1 for the video.
They EXPECT to ship NOVEMBER, but will MOST likely be delayed into 2006
