Developers can barely make most their games run good in 480p and now we have a game that playes 1080i @ 60fps
Gran Turismo 4 got released in some select places overseas and already boards are being flooded with pics. The best news came when it was soon discovered that Gran Turismo 4 not only runs 480p, but also 1080i in Photo and in-game races. That is an amazing feat.
Initially this news was deemed fake but more and more reports are coming in that state this is a true fact.
March isnt coming soon enough now

Who says Xbox graphics are better than PS2? They haven't seen Metal Gear Solid 3 yet.

The chinese version is due out on Dec. 28/04 according to Yesasia for about $85Cdn before tax and shipping. Anybody know if the overseas version works in North American PS2? If so, I won't wait and just pick one up from Yesasia.

crap compared to MGS3

If you're talking graphics then I'd have to disagree. Ninja Gaiden runs at higher res, better textures, better character models, better effects and better implementation of surround sound.
If you're talking story, gameplay, and atmosphere then yes MGS3 is better.

ledorky: that doesnt make sense. GT4 doesn't magically come with AA.. which can be seen in jaypatel's last screenshot.

Higher resolutions tend to reduce the need for anti-aliasing, however, so even without AA, GT4 should have a good deal less aliasing than it would otherwise have had at a lower res.

As much as I would love this to be true (I'm a PS2 and Xbox owner and love both consoles) I'm thinking that it's just not possible.
Soul Caliber was 720p on the Xbox but it had to run in 4:3 ratio as the Xbox wasn't capable of running in 16:9 at that rez.
Now they're saying that GT4 can run at 1080i at 16:9 at 60fps? I would love for this to be the case more than anything, but I will have to see it for myself 1st.
I remember the orginal Ridge Racer for PS1 got updated a few years ago so that it would run at 60fps, but you couldn't race with other cars on the track.
I wonder if this would be the case with GT4; 1080i rez but with only you on the track?

Doesn't X-Men: Legends run in 720p and 16:9?

So they had time to implement 1080i support during gameplay, but didn't have the time to get the network code working properly. I'll still need proof because I still don't think the PS2 hardware can support 1080i.

Found a couple of screen caps that someone posted from another site...
Not sure if these are genuine, but there is a noticable difference.

Yes, because I'm sure my Costco 20 inch TV will be able to take advantage of this.

Yeah there's a slight difference. Doesn't look too dramatic to me. Sure the 1080i is a bit sharper but it looks like it still uses the same lower resolution textures. From the screenshots I'd say it's more pseudo high definition, without matching high res textures it doesn't look any better then 480p with proper AA, imo.

The jaggies are reduced a lot on the 1080i display. I will be interesting to actually see some video to check out the frame rate.

It's 1080i so logically it must be 30fps.

I would've preferred that they ditch the 1080i and max out resources at 480p, starting with those textures.

1080i is running at 60fps. some object geometry is compromised in that mode but its a tradeoff i'll take. the cropped pics in my first post are just beautiful to look at

Looks ok.. if I saw that pic without knowing what res it was, I wouldn't think it was capped off 1920x1080 res.

yea it does. I have the game and it looks good at that rez on widescreen.
Ninja Gaiden is 480p with 16:9 support. As for the MGS3 vs Ninja Gaiden....well I havn't seen MGS3 in action.......but Ninja Gaiden is by far one of the best games I've seen visually. Not just cutscenese and FMVs....the normal gameplay graphics are pretty insane especially with the HDTV wires at 480p on a large wide screen tv.

Some other forums are debunking the 1080i stuff. The image comes to the TV as 1080i but the game is not actually rendering a true 1080i image. Using some form of upscaling or software to take the existing render and do a faux 1080i output.

I always thought that switching to 1080i from 480p allows you to see a lot more of the scenery, etc. On my modded xbox, when I switch from 480p to 1080i, I can see all the choices in the menu but the font is quite tiny. Think of it as switching from 640x480 resolution to 1600x1200 resolution. You can fit a lot more things on your desktop instead of seeing only 1 window at a time. Dragon's Lair on the Xbox allowed you to see much more when you switched from 480 to 1080. In those pictures, the sizes are identical.
