I would like a second opinion on this movie because I rented "Shaun of the Dead" based on other people's positive reviews and I thought it was a waste of time and money.

i talked to one of my 'artistic' friends and they couldnt get enough of it, she was pretending to be a 'liger' infact....freak
the movie was too abstract and pointless to me to enjoy. if you want to feel confused, unsadisfied and raped of 12$, i reccomend this movie 100%.

NP and Shaun Both Rock, I bought the Shaun DVD back in October before it hit theatres here, and was extremely satisfied that I did. Awsome movie, can't wait to check out Spaced now. I thought NP was good too, and is on my buy list if I don't get it tomorrow.

Napoleon Dynamite is destined to be a cult classic, much like The Big Lebowski. They both have oodles of great one-liners, many of the ND ones have found their way into regular rotation with the guys here at work.. Course, they are much less funny if you haven't *seen* the movie..

ND was a pointless, it didn't really have a plot.
movies don't need to follow a specific criteria (ex. having a predictable plot, crisis and solution) to necessarily be a good movie. sometimes its very rewarding to see something totally different than all the crap that is made these days, which is what makes this movie one of the best ones made in a long time

kinda old, but the movie doesnt exactly end with them at school. wait till the end of the credits and you will see that kip weds lashawna( i think) in a short 3 minute or so clip. just so you know.

I thought ND was a funny movie. However it was pretty much just a collection of random scenes thrown together that had nothing to do with each other.
Even though I liked it, I can really see how some people would think it was the dumbest movie ever made.

I found it awkward, for the sake of trying to be awkward, rather than being naturally awkward. That kind of turned me off.
Anyhow, it still had it's moments and lines.

unlike other views expressed here, i have to say that movie was a huge waste of time, and i'm glad that i didn't pay money to see it.
the movie is just not funny. the fact that there are some memorable lines in it does not make the movie into comedy gold.
here's what i mean--i have pointed this out to about a dozen people who loved this movie, and even they have to agree with me:
people talking about the movie are funnier than the actual movie itself.
think about it, for all of you nd fans out there, and you will realize it is true.
like seinfeld, this movie is about nothing, however, seinfeld was funny because its writing was about X10 better. no, make that X100 better.
my .02 cents

I agree the movie's not "comedy gold" but it is funny or at least there are funny parts. It is one of the most unique movies that I've seen in awhile with no predictable plot which is why I liked it.

some of the moments that will be remembered -
Uncle Rico throwing a piece of steak (good aim)
Napoleon's sigh when he called his brother
"I see you're drinking 1% milk...."
FYI - there was a clip of the brother marrying La Honda after the credits rolled. More randomness added into this movie.

Hehe...some of my fav parts are
-The dance part on stage
-"You're just jealous cause I've been talking to hot chicks all day"
-Pedro's cousins drive by and shake their head at the bully and he runs away
-At the Rexkwando place, Kip does one of those street fighter floor kicks

Loved it and bought it. I can TOTALLY understand people's aversion to it as it really doesn't build up to any real climax or resolution. But here are a few things to consider:
Its huge with the university/college crowd - maybe that's who its targetting. C'mon whose more stoned or drunk than post secondary school students :) I know we watched it after a few pints and cried laughing. Especially at Pedro's inability to cool his hot head.
Second thing. Listen to the line Napolean gives to Pedro before going onstage: "Listen to your heart, that's what I do" All the misfits in this movie march to their own drummer and that's what its celebrating. Its shows us the underbelly of High School geek culture, warts and all.
"Do the chickens have large talons?" I used that one at KFC a few times.

love that soundboard, but they don't have him saying "Gosh", that would've made it perfect.
got the napoleon dynamite dvd for xmas and it has become one of my favourite movies now. you must watch the deleted scenes, my fave is pedro's holy chip scene... just watch it and you'll see.
even if you hate the movie, you must give it credit for doing so well for such a small production budget.

For the record, I didn't hate but didn't like it.
I felt the characters were caricatures with no depth whatsoever, and I didn't care what happened to them. On top of that, I didn't find it funny. King of the Hill successfully satirizes small town America (an easy target) with better writing and more sympathetic characters. Napoleon Dynamite could have learned from this.
Just my opinion though, I can understand why some people would love this movie, it is 'quirky.'
If you want to see this movie done much better, rent 'Welcome to the Dollhouse,' a mid 90s film.

The entire movie had a really odd feel to it.
Was it just me or was the background music sound constantly like elevator music? I just had this weird vibe while watching it.

now that is a movie I didn't care for...a better movie than that is 'Ghost World'
I don't see that much of a connection between ND and Dollhouse though...yeah, they both had the oddball student but ND was a string of gags for laughs, whereas Dollhouse was bleak and grim...each had a differnt intention

ND, don't even get me started. The acting was so poor and I don't know if they all act like that but in the movie they were acting like idiots. It wasn't that funny, ok maybe some parts but most of the movie was pretty lame. Overall the movie sucked.

Fightguard, Ghost World is along the lines of Napoleon Dynamite, true. I loved Ghost World. Dollhouse is edgey and mean spirited, a bit different.
Those who liked ND should try out Election, an underrated and largely forgotten 1999 film starring Matthew Broderick (yup, formerly Ferris Bueller) as a floundering high school teacher. A really sharp satire.

I cant believe some people dont like this movie. It is probably the funniest and original movie I have seen since Ace Ventura 1. Its different in a good way. How about that all egg lunch ND was served with the egg drink and him gagging try to drink it. Classic stuff. And really my 50 year old dad was in tears laughing at this movie too. So it really should appeal to any age group. Gosh! Oh yeah how about that farmer shooting the cow in front of the bus load of kids. Dont be such decroded pieces of crap.

That was when the movie was made, when they had no idea how succesful it'd be. He must have some provision where he gets a certain % or a certain $ per million in box office and dvd sale.

Resurrecting this ancient thread because I've just watched ND for a 2nd time and still just dont get it. Stiff, unbelieveable "acting", a tired plot, and jokes/one liners that even when reading the so-called classics posted above, just arent funny. What is so funny about everyone acting catatonic and semi-********?
I love quirky, unpredictable movies that break the mold, but not just for the sake of doing it. To me, this was like having human non-actors try to act out Beavis and Butthead but without the depth or charm
Shaun of the dead was also cheesy and boring. I dont get the hype of that. A mockery of the horror genre. Wow, how clever and fresh. Oh wait, there were English accents, therefore it must be truly comedic genius (according to the poseurs).
If someone wants to see a GOOD non-hollywood movie, try for Election, Sexy Beast, or even better, In The Company of Men

If you haven't seen the Evil Dead movies, or Night/Dawn/Day of the dead movies you would miss half the jokes, and some of them are pretty suttle (Ash called in sick today for example :arrowl: gold)
