HI,
Recently bought the Dlink DI-624. After rebate will come to $78.35.
After reading some reviews I hear the Linksys is good as well. Some people say they really like the Dlink, others say the Linksys is better.
Any thoughts. I havent opened the router yet so I may return it. Just wanted to get one to use with my new laptop I receive tomorrow.
So any votes.

seems kinda expensive for that router.
I personally like USR, and i have heard good things about linksys.
heard some bad things about dlink too. But it really depends on your luck.
but i think for your price you can get a much cheaper router. I know the USR will be on sale for 39.99 AR at FS on boxing day.

Thats taxes in and all. Have you seen a cheaper price, and if so where, because Ill gladly price match staples.
I may return it and try to get something with the Boxing Day sales tonight.

Has anyone found the Dlink DI-624 Wireless router cheaper than $69.95 after $50 mail-in rebate.
Ive been searching the Boxing day flyers. Any good Wireless G router deals. I cant seem to see any.

I find the firmware in Linksys to be a lot more flexible than the D-Link routers.

I was helping a freind with his D-Link the other day. I found the admin GUI to be much more confusing and hard to use. My linksys has alot more stuff to play with, and is a much cleaner interface.
My vote would be with Linksys.

We have abbout 50/50 for Dlink and Linksys.
I found out that if you ant extended range with the Dlink you cna just put in a different antenna because it screws in and out, while the Linksys you need a bridge or extender. Just something I read somewhere

I have to say Linksys. Better in the config dept. and is stable.
Had a SMC router before my Linksys. The SMC went dead after a year or so.
For D-Link, dunno. Heard both good and bad. But since I never actually used or tested one, can't say anything on D-Link.

Thanks for putting up this post Spidey.
Same dilemna I'm facing. The linksys with speedboooster is going to work out to be about 45$ more than the Dlink extreme G after MIR. I googled and came across a review from one of the computer review/mag sites. Anyways the gist of it was Linksys wireless G with speedbooster was the overall winner. Their closer details suggested that the linksys had better range. I'm probably going to goo with the linksys since I've had good success with my previous linksys router and modem.

The D-Link tech support is pretty good. Located in Canada. And if you ever have to send it in for warranty, at least they are in Canada.

Funny, i heard the other way arround (linksys screw D-link not). I know that you can unscrew the antenas because i bought a WRG54 a month ago and it works great (and had unscrewable anteni/antenas/whatever). And also from what i hear if your really in a crunch for distance then you can "modify" a linksys's firmware to exceed the maximum output allowed by the FCC.

I have several Linksys routers in place in the GTA and a few within 200 Kms. The old versions work better than the new ones. When Cisco acquired Linksys, the GUI changed and the routers are now slow to respond to updates (they time out frequently). If you have your Norton Internet Security on, it is difficult to apply changes. When I manage these routers remotely the timing out thing while I am trying to apply changes is frustrating. I am trying some Dlink products, and am getting a good response from them. The Cisco/Linksys GUI has wrecked a product that I used to tell everybody was reliable. I am very disappointed in them.

My Linksys ADSL modem has never gave me grief, and my Netgear router has always been good to.
I looked at the Linksys with Speedbooster but the Dlink extreme was cheaper.
Ill see in store today

I'm trying to decide if I should get a Netgear ($480 HKD), Linksys ($450 HKD) or 3Com ($530 HKD) 802.11g router. Not sure which one to get...
(Exchange rate is around $6.31:$1.00)

I've setup a few wireless networks with Linksys routers in the past. So I decided to try the Dlink 624 for my personal network....BAD MISTAKE. The thing is a total piece of crap. I've followed every suggestion I can find on various forums to fic the reboot issue these things have, and it still didn't fix anything.
I even brought the router back...TWICE. the 3rd one still does the exact same thing.
If it's not too late, RETURN DLINK AND GET THE LINKSYS. Again, their not the best but nothing consumer grade is for networking. But they are the best of all evils. I had an old Netgear router before also and that worked fine. Not sure about the new ones.

Whats the reboot issue everyone keeps talking about, and how often does it happen. I only tested mine for about 3 hours last night and it seemed fine. Maybe I got lucky. I did do a firmware upgarde first thing, maybe that helped.

Best deals I saw recently .. the Linksys WRT54G for $35 after rebate, and the D-Link DI-524 for $30 after rebate. Sure enough, I kept the Linksys one of course :cheesygri

I did the new firmware with the hard reset, blah blah..no difference. It's especially worse if you have a 2.4 GHz cordless phone, or even if yuo live in an appartment building and your neighbour has one, everytime the phone rings, it rebooted my router. I went to a 5.8 GHz phone system and that helped a ton, but I still get 2-3 reboots a day and I live in a detached house.
One of those wireless networks (with a Linksys) I setup for a friend, he has a 2.4 GHz phone system and lives in an apartment, and never gets reboots. There must be something really sensitive with the DLInk circuitry or something.

I have 2.4 phone and I answered it right next to my laptop and no problems. Maybe there is just a bad batch out there or something, Im not sure. But like I said Ive only got 3 hours testing in. Im going to do more tweaking this week, increase security settings, etc. Right now Ive just got 128 key WEP going on. The firmaware upgarde added some extra security settings Ive got to research before trying.
I was worried about the 2.4 Ghz as well, and never even thought of it when I picked up the phone last night. I received email and was able to sruf while looking up some infor for a friend
Dont know what to say about the bad luck your having

I like the linksys because the blue matches the blue accents on my Inspiron 8600, and my Logitech Mediaplay mouse. :cheesygri

Don't really like any of them. The only consumer routers that have met my expectations are the ones made by Nexland.
I am using a linksys where I live right now. The thing chokes and dies whenever I put a load on it (single BT download). Don't even think its a heat problem since its freezing cold where it is located.
I had a linksys at work before, it would die whenever someone tried to download a large file over the network (Windows Networking). Thats getting replaced by a Dell server.
Used to have an SMC at home, it worked ok for a year or two (never really pushed it), then it started to randomly die on me. Been replaced with a linux router which later got switched to a Win2K server, has been working flawlessly since.
Had an SMC wireless where I lived before. Occasional disconnects (reasonable, I guess). But performance sucked (might be due to the wireless aspect).

Linksys.
I used to have a D-Link 614+ (now at my parent's house), then I swapped mine to a Linksys WRT54G and range is better. Plus Linksys has open sourced their firmware, so there are a few options out there if you're looking for more.
At my house we have 7 computers hooked up, 2 wirelessly (also have a small 10/100 hub going off one of the ports). One is a file server, so there is constant movement of big files on the network (IE. DVD's, DivX/Xvid) and speed is good. There are always atleast 2 or 3 BT transfers going, and maybe some IRC ones too, but performance is still there (well limited by Rogers).

Sounds likes everyone got their good and bad stories. Guess its between knowledge, getting a good or bad one from the shelf and some luck.

I've tried SMC (wired), Siemens(2.4b), USR(2.4b), iBlitz(2.4g) and Linksys(2.4g). Linksys hands down for options and relaibility. The open source firmware is awesome too.

I was working directly of my webserver last night updating a website, and it worked exactly like when it was wired. In fact there was no speed difference at all. I shoulf of gone wireless a long time ago. Got to watch family guy while doing data entry last night

Go with Linksys. Linksys=Cisco. Cisco knows how to make decent networking stuff.
I would rank Dlink below SMC, but thats just personal opinion after having used the products.

Bought this router on Boxing day as well, got the DWL-G520 pci card to go with it. Didnt see anything cheaper at the time.
Anyways, I've had the connection up for a good 3 weeks now, no problems. I don't do huge amounts of file transfers or downloads, but when i play music off one of my other comps, everything plays fine. emails here and there, light web browsing. I dont have a 2.4ghz so i dont have many problems with that. So far my experience with it is that its a good enough for what I do.
Does anyone know where I can get a better antenna. Although I dont get any signal loss, I'm only at 40-50 % signal strength.
Cheers
