hi, i'm looking at this the 30HF84 30" non-lcd widescreen tv from Future Shop.
$800, $400 off -- is it a good deal?
anyone know anything about this tv? i've found like 2 reviews online, and that doesn't really say much...
600 available chainwide - meaning how many per store? when should I line up, perhaps?
although the FS website says only 480i, there's something about a crystal blah blah, which seems to upconvert to 1080i... or something. i don't know too much about tv's.

Too lazy to check the spec, if it is HD ready yes good deal, if not no. I got my philps 30" wide screen for $520.

did a quick google review search and got this,
It suppports progressive scan this way, so all viewing with this device is in '480p' (480 lines displayed progressively). This is further 'upconverted' to '1080i' (1080 lines displayed interlaced) through the TV circuitry. Like most HDTVs the 30HF84 doesn't do 720p natively, it can do 540p or it will upconvert the 720p signal to 1080i.

I was looking at this too, but if you google the TV it seems like a lot of people have geometry problems with this set. Could be that they got a bad batch, but then maybe not. I'm passing.

fightguard - is that a bad thing ... ?
hmm. ... it says it supports "HD", but, technically, it's not an HDTV?
as for the phillips widescreen - where'd you get it for $520?

it's a good thing :) it is HD-ready...some widescreen TVs this size (and smaller) are only 480i (Standard Definition), probably like Focus' Phillips

I'm passing. from what i read...geometry problems were recognised in early batch but have since been fixed. If it's made after Septermber 2004, you're okay.

Yeah, I read a review to that effect too, but nothing conclusive (A lot of the negative reviews are pretty recent). Even if Toshiba did fix the problem with the later batches, there's no guarantee that you'll get a post-september version.
It does seem to be a good price though, and I guess you can always return it.

I have the 34" version of this model and I love it. IIRC, the 30" version has a black band along the bottom which my mom didn't like so that's why we got the 34".
