just shoveled my driveway. The GENIUS' plowing the roads conveniently made a 3.5 foot snow bank and the bottom of our driveway. Took us about 1/4 of the time just to take down the snow bank.
To top it all off, i'm feeling a cold coming on.

You don't want big dumps of snow like this... It's actually raining in Ottawa now. Funny, just a few days ago (Monday), it was -31C (with windchill effect of -40C) and now it's raining...

Oh man - this morning was BRUTAL.
I suppose it doesn't help that my car is lowered 2" and that in the snow 2" makes a difference. Also doesn't help that my tires (which have always been awesome in the snow WHEN MOVING, have always been crap from a standstill).
This week I've been taking my brother to work as his ride is on holiday.
We leave in the morning at 6:40.
So I cleaned the car off and shovelled the driveway behind my car, and thought best to throw the shovels in the back of the car as the snowplows had not been yet. I live on a big hill in a residential area so I knew I was heading DOWN! We made a couple of streets over when we encountered our first stop sign at a right-hander. The snow was 25-30cm deep here and there was basically only 1 "groove". Making a turn onto a street with a groove coming across us killed any momentum I had and we were stuck stradling it! We got out and shovelled and then a 4x4 came by and 2 guys helped push. We got going again only for some fool to pull out of his driveway up ahead and immediately get stuck in the middle of the road. He ended up reversing (more grip) into a driveway across the street. We ended up stuck again. Brother pushed and off we go.
Dropped him off with no problems but on the way home there was a bus making a left-hand turn at the top of a hill and a long line of traffic pulling up behind. I knew if we came to a stop we were doomed (due to the hill). Sure enough I arrived on scene being the only car that had to stop. After 5 mins of sliding over to the side I was able to turn around, head DOWN the hill, make a left and um, start my detour.
Only 1 street I went on had been cleared - the rest were 'grooves'. Still I was doing ok until I turned into my street (coming from other direction as I knew I could never make it up my HUGE hill). Of course at 7:15AM the only people using the little street that joins my street to a main road are people *going* to work. Therefore there are NO tracks heading the way I'm going. I realize this as I plow into 30cm of virgin powder. Having enough momentum to get into the wrong-way 'groove' I am only 200m from home now - it's just around the (slightly uphill) & blind bend. Only problem was the 1 groove was on the left side of the road. Hopefully I could make it without anyone coming up the hill because otherwise I'd either have to reverse all the way or intentionally bury myself.
Um, I got home at 9:30AM...
:o
.. snowplows came at 10:00

The jerkoff snowplow was plowing snow all night! I couldn't even sleep, it was loud and this blue light kept on flashing! He also left a gift behind a 3 ft wall of ice in front of the driveway... so I took an axe, trying to soften it..., I didn't shovel it :cheesygri. I shoved it back on the road.

this winter is our first winter with a RWD car. never been stuck or had an accident during winter time *knock on wood* with all seasons. i told my parents that they need winter tires since the car would be a different drive. they said nah never had a problem before with our cars in the past so no point. i kept on arguing with them but to no avail. this morning my mom was getting ready to go to work. as soon as our car left our drive way it got stuck. took nearly 2 hours just to get the car to move 5 ft back onto our driveway. must have had 15 cars drive by all going in their merry way following the grooves. i kept on pointing out to them as another car pass by... FWD ... FWD ... FWD. now they're getting snow tires :cheesygri

This is the first winter where I've had four snow tires (instead of two). It really makes a big difference. I didn't have any problems in terms of car handling. I wasn't able to get on the 427 from the 401E though because two tractor trailers got stuck on the overpass ramp. :(

Yeah, nothing like assaulting the frozen ice on your driveway/sidewalk with a gardening tool to loosen it up...

i dont get it
people have snowblowers so its pretty easy to clear the snow
so y cant they just do it to the side instead of shooting it out to the street

snow? we're mowing lawns and jogging in shorts here :D
ahhh, what a beautiful winter

It took me 2.5 hours to clear my drive way. My snow blower needs a tune up. So I had to do it manually.
It would have been done in an hour if it wasn't for that inch of ice on top of the snow.
Well, at least it is a white Christmas.

I know in my town it is illegal to put snow onto the street.
I remember a few years back a neighbour a few doors down was snowblowing into the street (I still don't get that -- go up and down, not across!) and when the plow came through he noticed it. About an hour later a bylaw office paid the neighbour a visit.. :cheesygri

It rained ... no it poured all day yesterday here in Quebec City. We had all this beautiful snow. It rained stronger than it usually rains in summer. Now half the snow is gone and the stuff that's left is all frozen and crusty. :(

It should be like that everywhere. People are morons. What is the point of putting snow on the street? You want someone to get stuck in front of your house? Or worse, have an accident?

Haha you too? I had to use the shovel to break up the inch-thick ice sheets on top of the snow...and then the same shovel was used to clear the 2-3 inch thick ice sheet that was UNDER the snow.
