I'm going to Pickering to pick up someone from a car body shop (because of a car accident).
Then I'm going to drive to Woodbridge to get a quote for damage to my car caused by another car accident (that occurred 2 days before the aforementioned one).
My parents return tonight at 18:00. There is a snowstorm. 2 car accidents in 3 days.
Isn't Christmas grand?

I made it. One of the first winters that I don't need to drive. Good thing that I didn't even bother changing my low profile summer tires.
TTC ride from home took me less than half hour :)

I wouldn't expect that much...it's difficult to keep on top of it when the temperature drops, the snow is falling hard, and the traffic is light... I don't blame them at all, but I will have concerns if it's not in better shape tomorrow morning :)

Well I got up 6 am to go to meet the guy at the body shop. On the highway at 7:20 am and he calls me and says that he doesn't want to go because he thinks no one will pick him up to get his car. I convince him otherwise.
~8 am he calls me and says his car is stuck and he can't get out. I say that the body shop boss is going on vacation until the 2nd week of January and he begrudgingly says it can't be helped.
I got home at 10 am. It's hell frozen over outside.

Hubby just called and he's just leaving Toronto, we'll see how long it takes him to get home. He said that even at midnight last night the roads were a mess going in. Many of the guys there said they hit the freezing rain going in. It's currently raining here in Niagara so I expect him to hit the freezing stuff around Burlington...

That pic's actually one of the nicer locations. At where I'm at in Toronto, the snow on my driveway is almost up my shins.
And the rain is coming and freezing over the top layer. Gonna wait till it dies down a bit and see if I need to grab my axe....

Kazaam, that's not the case at all because of the lakes and the geography of the area. We get a whole lot more snow here in Niagara than Toronto does because of sitting in the middle of 2 lakes. We get lake effect from both lakes here. Kingston gets more than Toronto being on the eastern end of the lake and the prevailing winds coming up the lake (same as Buffalo). Niagara Falls sits on the top of the escarpment so we get more snow than St. Catharines. It's a very complex area for weather patterns and predicting it...

ditto for Ottawa. We get a ton of snow and wind every year. This year has been extremely bad.... our snow banks are almost as high as our cars!!
But you torontoians try to survive when you get snow "almost up to your shins"....bbwwwwahahahahahahaha!

It was alot higher then my shins where I am.
The roads though were a mess. But nothing I couldn't handle. Some people overeact in a bit of snow.
But I like all the snow. Holidays are here, and drunken toboganning!! :)

I know. But for "bad" is relative and for Toronto it's bad.
I've been in Ottawa though. Man it can get might cold and windy there....my bro was there for a year going to Carleton. So if not for me, then he, knows your pain :)

Dec 23rd, 2004, 11:15 AM
But Skanji, it's all relative. When an area that is not used to a dumping of snow gets dumped on it, it's a big deal. I would imagine that folks in Labrador thinks you guys in Ottawa are snow wimps too! ;) I have a friend in Kentucky that has over 12" on the ground right now, another friend in Tennesee that has 1/2" of ice covering everything. They aren't used to this kind of weather...

i live in North York, work in Whitby. The commute took 1 hr today. Funnything is, where i live it was not plowed at all even on the main streets, then on the 401 it wasn't plowed either. When i got to Pickering, the 401 is plowed clean from the border on, and all the streets were plowed.. Why does GTA suck so much at removing snow???
This was at 8:30am too.

Took significantly longer to get in, but I did make it to work. I dunno why everyone's complaining so much, the roads are bad b/c they haven't been plowed.. and the freezing rain makes driving all the more dangerous.. but this snowstorm (of what I've seen of it) seems more on average than anything extraordinary..

oh so what you're saying is, that you prefer to live in a city year after year, that has proved itself as having crappier weather than another city, and you make fun of us. yeah a smart person would have moved, taking punishment like that doesnt make you manly , just dumb. :)

There's more to a city than just weather. Living in Toronto, I can see how people might not realize that, but it's true. :) I live in Winnipeg - come on, we've got the crappiest weather of any of the major Canadian cities. All the same, I love it here. I don't think that makes me dumb, although it does force me to be a bit hardier. :)

Of course Ottawa keeps ticking, 75% are government workers.... they called in sick today so the 25% remaining have a clear path to work. I have live in both Toronto and Ottawa, neither has it better or worse.
Why do we all love to complain about how bad one's city's weather is like. So we can all share your misery.

well i'd agree if we're talking about montreal. :) I/d move there despite their crappy weather. on the other hand i wouldnt move to Ottawaunless i got a good job there. From what i've heard, ottawa is really pretty, and a nice place to live, but if you're young its kinda boring.
And you're making fun of tornoto and how people see weather as defining a city, in that case go talk to the people in vancouver. :)
