a prank or the real thing? ryerson university

Well i just checked my ryerson email and i got an email saying i was placed on probation which is bad because that means i failed some courses. Now i talked to 3 others and they also said they got the email and said that they were pranks. There are several clues in the email that lead to the email being a prank. First of all the address of the person who sent the email had some extra stuff in her email. Normally ryerson people have an email of just @ryerson.ca but the email from the sender was @gwemail.ryerson.ca. I also looked up the person's name and her email came out to @ryerson.ca not the extra stuff. Second of all, the recipients of the email was 1st-yeareng at ryerson. I'm guessing that email sends an email to every 1st year engineering student because previous emails i had received had this as well. Third, the email was sent at 10:43pm of dec 22. What professor sends emails to ryerson students at 10:43pm. Although this could be a prank, i'm taking it seriously anyway. Although i'm surprised if i did that poorly on the exams because i thought i did at least ok in most of my exams. Anyway if any ryerson engineers want to confirm this please post and if anyone else would like to speculate feel free to as well. Thanks.

No clue.. but that's a pretty stupid/mean prank, if it is one. I'd contact your registrar.

yeah it does suck. what sucks more is so far i know 3 others that got the same email. Is there something wrong with that? I seriously thought I was better than this. I did not expect to fail.

Alot of 1st year gets suspended, specially electrical engineering. It's not the end of anything, I know alot of folks work through it. Good luck eh. It's probably true, I email my profs too and they reply. One of my profs have xxx@arts.ryerson.ca.... so.. (shrugs)

Ahh... I won't tell you not to worry but I've seen many people that have gone through it. Alot of Comp sci guys also get on propation, I've known people that is basically on probation until they graduate... heh. Riding a thin line there eh.

Just have to tough it out tis all, you can make it through.

thanks for the support immortal. I was browsing the first year engineering boards at ryerson and found some more people who got the email was not expecting it at all as well. We'll see how this turns in the morning.

not really sure. Earlier there was an email regarding when marks would be posted and when timetables for the next semester would be out. It said that marks would be posted on the 20th and it had the

attached to the bottom. However another one was sent before that saying the 26th without that thing at the bottom and that one was wrong because after that we got an email clarifying marks would be out the 26th.

Also, it was reported that people received two of these emails one to their actual email address and the mass address.

Sending out email from any mail server is quite easy if you can telnet into port 25 (smtp) of the mail server. That's why you get so many spams. Even for properly secured network, the port is usually open for the internal network. That means someone from ryerson is orchestrating these pranks.

I got an email from the university board on student discipline, regarding Academic Honesty, and I was like WTF?? It scared the living **** out of me, as I just handed in 4 term projects....but it turned out, it was an email sent to the entire student body...

If there's no form of personal identification on that email, then I'd say is safe to call it a prank. Probations are not handed out by mass emails and should at least have your name on it or something.

Contact your registrar. Let them track down the bastard and give him/her the boot.

To all First-Year Engineering Students,

Yesterday at 10:43 pm, an e-mail was sent to all students in First-Year
Engineering telling them that they are on probation. This was NOT sent
by the First-Year Engineering Office.

If the email you received was sent to "1styear-eng@ryerson.ca" and not
to your specific email address, then please disregard the email and
accept our sincere apologies for any stress this may have caused.

Our office, however, did email students on probation yesterday. If the
email you received was sent specifically to your email address, then the
email is valid and you must follow instructions in the email (ie. attend
the Probationary Seminar on Tues. Jan. 4).

This a very serious security breach and we are working very hard with
Ryerson Security and the Toronto Metro Police to solve this matter. The
guilty party will be expelled from the University.
