So, I've been noticing in surfing through the buyselltrade forums and notice that there are hardly any nikon slr lenses and/or bodies for sale, however, canon stuff (especially lenses) gets put on quite often. I'm wondering why that is?

Personally, I shoot with nikon f80 and f70, however, I agree that both nikon and canon make great slr systems and both have their advantages and disadvantages. However, the fact that not very much nikon stuff is ever traded here on RFD intrigues me....

Any thoughts?

Really? I never noticed that.

I have been a longtime Canon user, I had a EOS10, and Rebel film camera, and recently made the jump over and got a Nikon D70.

I really like Canon systems, and found the price/performance ratio to be excellent (and still is).

Nikon has always been an "engineering company", not a great marketing company, and thus Canon seems to do a better job of getting brand name awareness to the general public. From their great P&S cameras, to their inkjet systems, to their camcorders and aggressiveness in pushing the market with cameras like the Digital Rebel and ELPH models, they set the pace in attracting new customers.

Nikons lenses have always been priced a bit higher, and their dealer network is more limiting and isn't as strong (can't find their DSLR's at Futureshop for example). So there are just more people buying Canon stuff. Once you have one Canon, it's natural to look for another Canon.

OT: seems like you guys know your stuff about cameras so I hope you guys don't mind me asking here :D

Seriously considering the Nikon 8800 but will probably hold out until after new years. Just wondering if you have any opinoins on any other cameras with around the same specs as this one? Thanks

I definitely wouldn't stop you from buying the 8800, it looks like a nice piece...

Having the VR lens is a definitely interesting feature to have especially with the 10X zoom.

Nikon doesn't have as many digital camera offerings as Canon because Nikon doesn't take their 1 year old digital cameras, dip them in a new colour paint and then re-release them :D

Most people that buy into Nikon, know their stuff... pay extra for it, and as long as there is money to be made with the equipment, they will hold. The lenses bring almost the same dollar regardless of year... model. It's like holding kugerands...

Yeah, that is true, Canon does market their equipment much better than Nikon does. I guess that might account for the overwhelming popularity of Canon equipment floating around.

That's too bad for Nikon. They make excellent stuff and I'm always on the lookout for good used lenses for my F80 and F70.
