Why are you implying that the quality will become worse after the Chinese company takes over? If a German or French company bought the IBM pc division, would you say the same thing?
Is it just because the company's is based in China, you think is inferior? Your realize most gpus are made in Tawain, aka TSMC right? The best motherboards are also made by Chinese companies.....

Made in China != made with quality. In fact, many times it means exactly the opposite.
But, I don't believe the quality of Thinkpad laptops will go down just because a Chinese company bought out IBM's PC division.. at least, not initially..

While I think that the inference made is that Chinese quality is worse than the current IBM standard, the point made about the fact that IBM did just sell its laptop and desktop divisions does prove foreboding. Regardless of who took it over, who's to say what the quality is going to be like of the new models. Considering that IBM has some VERY good laptops, if this new company changes things, its likely to go down. Not trying to say that China can't make some good quality stuff, but just to say that changing a formula that's currently (IMHO) the industry leader is not a recipe for success.
But to comment on the Chinese source of goods, I find that (again, just my observations on what I've experienced) its good for somethings, but electronics I'd far rather buy from Japan. I've had quite a few electronics goods that were produced in China that have failed on me (just like I've had some electronics goods that were produced there that are quality goods). On average, I've had better luck with Japanese electronics. Don't take this as racist or biggotted; I'm personally just expressing my own observations. To dismiss all Chinese goods as crap though is ridiculous - considering they make a LARGE percentage of everything. With that ratio, its no wonder so many of their products fail - because damn near everything everybody owns is made there!

That's somewhat my point too. I'm no advocate for the quality of Chinese-made products, but in all fairness it's not that bad. Besides, even if manufacturing is done in China, IBM has their standards.
People who complain about the quality of stuff made in China, Mexico, Bangladesh, etc. are the exact same people who didn't spend money on expensive electronics from Japan, Germany, UK when they existed. It's partly their fault that companies have to resort to cost-cutting measures like these. Her it's pretty much IBM saying "You want cheap IBM-quality stuff, we'll give you cheap IBM-quality stuff." There's no complaining if you ask me.

The external IBM site is for sales of IBM merchandise to the public. The thread starter was pointing to the EPP... Employee Purchase Plan, which I agree should not have been posted here because it doesn't concern everyone. To answer your question, no, you're not an employee so technically you're not eligible to purchase EPP deals yourself. But if you know someone working at IBM then that person can purchase it for you.
Cheers.

who cares about where it's made. as long as quality control is maintained, there shouldn't be any noticeable difference. China's a very large and versatile countries... yes they're reputable for their cheap knockoff products but they are also capable of producing world class products as well.
And if you didn't know already, look inside some of the really high end IBM server boxes. "MADE IN CHINA"

IBM Desktops and Notebooks are already Made In China, they outsourced it a few years back if I'm not mistaken. But developement is still done in Japan for the Thinkpad.

How many Janpanese electronics you have is made in Japan? How much hourly you need to pay for a Japanese worker? $40? $60? $100? How much you are paying for Chinese workers? $10? $15? Do you think the electronics will be same price if they are made in Japan? You are paying what you get...
With the improvement of Chinese skill workers, I think the quality will increase as well. But still you are paying what you get...

I was in Japan a couple years ago, and was told by one of their locals that all their electronics that are exported out are 'crap' as defined by the Japanese. The stuff is Japan's inferior stock that is left over and can't sell in it's own country. Lots are even refurbished items that are returned by the Japanese.
That's why Japanese stuff sold here in Canada looks older, and you wonder why the Japanese get to play with new toys and we don't?
This is the same for cars.
I had Japanese made electronics crap out on me. For example, I purposely bought a Panasonic Made in Japan DVD player. but it crapped out after just one year. Same for some Japan made Sony stereos, the laser on the cd player just died..gosh...
That's why I never fall for the "Made in Japan" advertising anymore.

Sounds like a bunch of BS, ud666. Yes, the Japanese have different models and lots of stuff that don't come to North America, but I find it very difficult to believe that we're getting Japanese rejects. Exactly how arrogant are these people to even suggest that the western world is not deserving of their finest stuff?

I would have to disagree with the person you spoke with (I suspect he was just joking with you) however having said that the core of your statement is true. Made in Japan doesn't carry the same quality seal it did before. The last couple MIJ products I've picked up (a dvd recorder and cd-mp3 player) hasn't really been higher quality than the made in china/india et al stuff I have. Mind you it's not like it's crap or defective or anything - I just won't be paying a premium for MIJ stuff as I may have in the past.

No one was arguing. By the way, cursing and arguing in an ad hominem way really reflects on your character.
I agree that many "Made in China" goods are sometimes less reliable, but one must also consider the price you pay for those goods. In more expensive products, better quality components and more skilled workers are used in the manufacturing process. How can one expect a $20 mp3 player to perform like a $200 one? An IBM laptop is an expensive good, so skilled labour will be used to make it. China is perfectly capable in providing highly skilled labour. To suggest that quality will get worse because is accquired by a Chinese company is simply ludicrous.
Remember, the Chinese company is paying for the IBM. They are shrew enough not to dig their own grave and risk tainting the brand image.

Looks like you are right, but nevertheless, there aren't any amazing deals as I expected. Thank god I bought a good cheap laptop before instead of waiting till boxing day.

IBM seems to never offer the public any crazy deals like those seen in EPP a month ago.

OK
I understand that a stock holder can get a number so that he can buy at the epp price
lets say if I purchase a share, where can I find this number? :?:
You get a mailing on a quarterly basis (I think, perhaps more often) containing that number. Unfortunately, I received mine recently and have since thrown it out :( I could use one of those Txx models...

Along with ultraportability (2.9lb traveling weight) comes compromise.

You might be surprise to find out how arrogant the Japanese nation really is then.

I always thought the Japanese were relatively humble, but I've had recent experiences that say otherwise.

they'll have new stock as soon as everything is gone i believe. that's ibm tradition. but they'll be still "cheaper" models. their high end models are all out of stock I believe. If you go to their wbesite anything that says call for availability is usually out of stock.

Thanks. Had my eye on a T41 512MB RAM, 60GB 7200rmp HD CDRW/DVD for $1299, but by the time I'm ready to order, it's all gone. Now they only have 256MB 5400 rpm/40G HD for the same price.

No, that should be after as I saw 5 available this afternoon. I couldn't believe the price myself first and double check it. And then 1 hour later, it's all gone.

There are still EPP deals if you click on the image with "Exclusive to Employee's and Friends" text. The best deal remaining is the $1399 T41 I mentioned in the last page.

Hm, to me it seems that the 60G 7200 rpm HD is still a better deal and $100 cheaper. Can't remember the processor speed but I would say 7200 rpm is more important ? I'm confused by their pricing.

This one has a better screen. You can easily upgrade the HD, but to replace the LCD screen is much more complex.

The other bonus on the $1,399 machine is Radeon 9000 Versus Radeon 7500.
So for $100 More you pay for SXGA and Radeon 9000 Upgrade and a Downgrade to 40GB 5400.

technoss and SLee: thanks for pointing it out for me. Now it makes more sense.
Do we see significant performance difference between ATI 9000 and 7500 series ?
Another question: could anybody confirm the spec for 2374 2U4: on IBM website it's mentioned that it is Win2000 but in the list given by ukhan, it seems to be XP Pro. So which one is correct ? I would imagine it's quite a hassle to switch from 2000 to XP and re-install all device drivers ?
Thanks

2374-2U4 is all sold out. Yes on the website the 2374-2U4 shows Windows 2000. I think it is a typo on IBM site.
I think it is not so much of a 9000 Vs 7500, but more of a XGA Vs SXGA. SXGA seem to fall into premium line while XGA mid class screen. SXGA has smaller fonts and can be anoying for some.

I am getting it for my parents
I think quality is the thing people should look for
even the r series is not as goo as the T, I still read good things about it
way better than junk like compaq, acer, dell etc
I was consider the toshiba but they dont have any laptop under 1500 with a centrino ;)

I placed my order from the EPP part of the site early Dec 24, and have not heard anything from them yet. Did anyone who ordered at around the same time got a respond from IBM? Yea I know its holiday time and no one works, but I am excited to get it.

It was previously mentioned most people are expecting them first week of January. If you call them they'll let you know when it has shipped, but will not give you a tracking number.
