I dont believe that is a dual layer. I think that is the 1610 which is "officially" a single layer burner.
The 1620 is the dual layer.
Whether or not the 1610 can be unofficially flashed to make it a dual layer is a different story. Good burner, nonetheless.

If the poster on the other thread is right, $100 rebate and may not be Benq's, I would stay away, even futher away if it is 1610.
Math...
1610? $149.99 x1.15 (tax) -$100 rebate = $72.49
1620 oem $75x1.15 =$86.25 some shop are selling as low as $68 if you search hard.

---------------
yah.. ur right.... DUAL FORMAT is NOT the same as DUAL LAYER........ BIG DIFFERENCE!
dual format = +/-
dual layer = dvd+r dl = ~8.5 GB one dvd disc double sided....
----------------------
EDIT: dual layer = dvd+r dl = ~8.5 GB one dvd disc 2 layers!
plz 4give my mistake!...
-----------------------
btw does n e 1 know whether or not 1610 is flashable to a dual layer drive??? if it CAN, then i might buy this drive.... but if it CAN'T then $50 after MIR for 1 1610 single layer is NOT such a great deal!

Well, since that Futureshop one was not dual layer (rather DUAL FORMAT)... OEMExpress has the BENQ Dual LAYER 16x dvd burner on sale for $69.99.
Of course you'll have to be in one of the cities that has an OEMEXpress though. http://www.oemexpress.com sale is in store and cash/interac only.

Most of the sales are for in store only...no online purchase and ship.

Wrong! Dual Layer is NOT DOUBLE SIDED!
Dual Layer is actually 2 layer or recordable media on the SAME side and read by different freq laser.

It's industrial strength media that is designed to be re-written a lot more than regular DVDRW media. Really you're paying for reliability. Also, I believe most DVDRAM burners support Mount Rainier packet writing to RAM disc so you can drag-drop files and burn them rather than having software do iso/image conversion in the background which is slower.

Agree. Not only that, so far wasted 3 DVD-Rs (100% failure) on BenQ when trying to create backup PS2 DVDs... But never wasted 1 on LG DVD writer. (Which makes me wonder)

I recieved one of the dual layer lg for Christmas. Installed easily. I was just wondering if I need more software then it came with to burn a protected dvd. I just tried one and it said it was protected and couldn't be burnt. So what software do I need to burn a protected dvd and is there any freeware?

Use DVDshrink and Nero, both can be obtained for free. Google them and as Majong said and you will find more than enough information to get started. Nero you can only get a demo for free which will integrate with DVDshrink and allow you to burn at 2X but it may be worth it to buy to get the fast speeds. Good luck:)

the benq 1610 dvd burner is a pice of junk! everyone I know returned the dvd burner already.. hahaha
shows how crappy it is.. I'd even tested it out, it can't read any dvd-r's that I'd burned from my pioneer burner. lol. back to the store it goes. lol fs must have a high stack of thoses benq's lol.

Make sure if you own the Benq 1610 or 1620 you go to their site and get the latest firmware.
