MCSD Designation Questions

I understand that you can study for your MCSD exams at home then take a test for a couple hundred bucks, and work your way towards an MCSD (or similar Microsoft designations). Has anybody done this? Has it worked? Any suggestions?

Yeah, it's the same way you can do an MCSE. There are plenty of MCSD-focused books and self-study material out there. Buy it. Read it. And practice, practice, practice.

Have you done your MCSD/MCSE like this, or know anybody who has? I just want to know if this is a viable way of doing it or not. While theoretically, you can do it, I wonder how well those books can train you for it...

I haven't done the Microsoft tests yet, but I got my Java certification many years ago. It's the same principle.

It all depends on how you like to learn. I self-studied for the Java certification, but my company also sent me on a short prep course for it. I'm much more of a book learner than a classroom learner, so I didn't really get anything out of the prep course. (The Java certification test at that time was very tough, and half of my co-workers that attempted the test failed it the first time...)

Training courses are pretty expensive, but if you learn better in that environment and you are able to pay for those courses then go for it. Otherwise, studying on your own is the only choice. Aside from books, I'm sure there are lots of online resources also... Google will lead the way. :D
